Reflection on Online Communities and BYOD
My views will start on Online Community, on its concept and functions. When we say, community, it is a group of people interacting, working, and sharing some common goals and interests. I supposed that neighbors converse in their backyards, while an online community, the members, interact simply through the internet. As a clarification, online community is not merely the same thing as a social network. Social network is held together by pre – established interpersonal; relationships such as family, colleagues, and friendship; people generally joined a social networking sites to maintain or somewhat strengthen old relationships and to build new ones. An online community, people have no relationship to each other at all but are brought together by their shared interests such as hobbies, common goals, or preferences for similar lifestylse or geographical locations. The very nature of online community, they reach out to people with specific interests. There is no magic formula, they simply use different approaches to inspire people to get involved depending on what it is the community stands for and what they are trying to achieve.
Bring your own device (BYOD), I have known the fact that it promises many benefits with greater innovations, better work – life balance, and improved productivity. Despite this promising benefits, BYOD also increases pressure on information technology to manage and secure the devices and data. Its disadvantage, if it is not fully regulated and understood, it can threaten IT security and put the business of the company at risk. I am amazed about the fact that BYOD is important in education; there are advantages in cost, convenience, and usability, easy access to content, and collaborative to learning. Since students are familiar with their own devices, there is no single steep of learning curve for using school provided devices. BYOD program supports the constructivist and experiential views of learning; students are able to create authentic learning experiences.
