There are a lot of department stores that exist in United States of America. But not everybody knows that a lot of them have a long history from the beginning of their existence. Barneys New York is a group of luxury department stores of United States that was founded in 1923 in New York.
This store managed to survive the 1990’s downturn and nowadays this store is still famous and still works as it is supposed to.
But despite the fact that nowadays everything is alight with the store, at some periods of its existence it happened that it faced some difficulties and challenges on the way to success.
The first is the high cost of goods in the store. In periods of economic crisis, when purchasing power declined, the amount of sales also decreased. However, due to the high quality of goods, the store was still able to stay in demand.
The second challenge was high level of competition in big cities, such as New York. But Barneys New York has never been like uptown department stores: it often asked downtown artists to do its windows and advertising. For example, they asked photographer Duane Michals to design store’s windows for Father’s Day (New York Magazine 34).
The third challenge that the store met is about difference of tastes and fashion in different regions of America. But to increase popularity of the store in some of the regions, the owners implemented special strategy: for example, when Jones Apparel opened new stores in Dallas, Texas, there were more clothes about urban style and prices were a little bit lower (Plunkett 124).
Every company and department store is able to attract attention of customers and pass through difficult times and challenges, no matter if it is luxury or cheap.
