Entertainment is undoubtedly, a big and lucrative business in the United States. The American film industry has grown massively over past decades and is, therefore, considered to be the cornerstone of the entertainment business in America. The US cinema market is growing rapidly as one may observe the expansion of movie theater sites, number of screens, rise in ticket sales and ultimately an escalated box office revenue figure. According to some analysts, the film industry is said to grow in value in the next four years, hence, proving its worth in both domestic, as well as export markets. As said earlier, the American film industry is a thriving business outside America, particularly in many countries of Asia such as China and India. Following is an analysis of both Indian and Chinese markets in terms of their attractiveness for American films wanting to market their products there.
American wants to invest China and India because of their huge population. In 2013, India had 1.252 Billion people and was growing at a rapid pace. Similarly, China had 1.357 Billion people. Both these countries have one of the largest population in the world, making it easier for American companies to sell their products. Furthermore, people in India look up to America as a success, and want to buy American products as a status symbol. As American markets get saturated, these two countries are a good place for American companies to expand into.
According to an article published in June 2012, China had become the largest foreign box office market for Hollywood movies. US-China co-productions are also on the rise as an increasing number of Chinese actors and plotlines are being borrowed by American filmmakers in their movies. Moreover, cities like Beijing and Shanghai are used as film locations which give the film producers greater access to such growing markets. The Chinese authorities have also developed legitimate web portals which offer licensed movies from the West. Initially, the Chinese market was plagued with pirated films but the problem was resolved once the government stepped in. The introduction of these verified portals means large profits to the American filmmakers are guaranteed. The film companies should preferably find themselves a distributor in China who would assist in monetizing their films. The only limitation for a Hollywood script in China is of the language barrier because the majority of the Chinese population are unable to speak or comprehend English. A further issue is of the quota of foreign films that can share in the box office revenue.
India’s rapidly evolving film industry has also become a pool of opportunities for US films. Throughout the history of American films, India has attracted the filmmakers as there have been many moments when India was taken as inspiration and was seen through the Hollywood lens.
For this reason, India is a big market for Hollywood, and the viewership of American movies is on the rise. An example of this is Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire, a movie so realistic and moving that one may completely disregard the fact that it is a Hollywood movie, that went on to win the Oscars. As a result, many Indians went on to watch the Dev Patel starred, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel which earned it great reviews. In addition to the above mentioned factors, the language issue is not as problematic as it is in China. A considerable amount of people can easily speak and understand English, therefore, all English language movies are a huge success. Also, the Indian film industry is an emerging market and is almost regulation free as compared to China. Anyone can come in and make what they want and due to this large US Studios such as Disney, Viacom, and Fox have won a large share of the Indian film market; the world’s largest and most popular that’s currently producing 1000 movies a year and marked its centenary recently.
