I agree with you from your first statement when you said that Sedaris’ Santa Land is a memoir and not personal essay as most of the students thought in the beginning. Ricardo, you justify your point by saying that Sedaris’ essay talks about a single topic but in different occasions. However, I don’t believe that this is the only reason you could have provided to substantiate the point that the essay is a memoir and not a personal essay.
I agree with the example you gave on humor and the funny part of the essay. No one will disagree with you that the part about dressing rehearsal was funny. Finally, I will also try not to take a side, just like you, on whether the essay is fictional or non-fictional. Different people will have distinct judgments on Sedaris’ work. Personal experience will define whether you look at the work as fictional or non-fictional which I accept.
I agree with your take on Sedaris’ tone in the essay. I would also not suggest that the tone was positive. Sedaris did not like the job; he didn’t believe that this was what he deserved. That could have affected his tone in many ways.
I agree with you when you say that writing a story in the first person is more intimidating. It is true that using first person singular always make the writer think that the person in the story is him or her which makes the story more personal.
I agree with your point on embellishment and the example you provided. While working on the same essay, I noted that Sedaris was very decorative when he was putting across his experience with the urine test which he underwent. Finally, I agree with the reason you gave on the difference between the essay and an autobiography. Autobiography focuses on a period of life event whereas Sedaris’ work only focused on a single event. This was a good job.
