Taxation of marijuana will mean that the product is legal in society. Marijuana is unhealthy product, and it makes no sense for the government to distribute a product that is immoral and exposes its people to a lot of risks. The main aim of the state is to protect the health of its citizens (Peters 35). Taxation will make the product readily available; hence, it will create an avenue for new consumers instead of rescuing the current citizens who are addicted to the drug.
Marijuana is very addictive drug, meaning it takes away the free will of citizens. Marijuana taxation will increase the consumers; hence, many people in society will not be in a position to make rational and informed decision. Marijuana taxation is dangerous to the society. This is based in the fact that it will increase health costs, increase violence, increase child neglect, and develops a lot of third party impacts.
According to the gateway theory, marijuana is a soft drug but it leads to consumption of hard drugs such as cocaine. Marijuana taxation should not be encouraged since it develops a platform for increased demand and consumption of other hard drugs (Peters 40). On the same note, marijuana taxation and legalization will automatically send a message to children that marijuana is accepted in society. Based on the counter arguments it is evident that marijuana should not be taxed.
