Creativity, as a practice, is more than just a means to entertain and distract ourselves. Most people think of creative efforts as being related to media and the arts – television shows, movies, paintings, books and so on – but all manner of other humanly pursuits require creativity as well. Whether it is in business, or administration, or government, or any other practical task at hand, the most innovative solutions are those made creatively. In order to make changes and advancements in our lives, culture and society, we have to be able to think outside the box and take risks that no one has ever thought of before. To that end, creativity is one of the most important instincts we have as human beings; without it, everything around us would stagnate and we would not think of new ideas and ways of being.
I firmly believe that my view of creativity is incredibly important to the way I view life. I fully admit that this perspective may be a little too pluralistic or idealistic, but I think there is nothing wrong with that. I believe so strongly that everyone needs to understand their own creative selves and must learn to exercise it, that this strongly shapes the way I work, learn and live. This kind of thinking mostly comes from being used to the people around me having this binary perspective on creativity, where ‘creativity’ is restricted only to what society has deemed ‘creative pursuits,’ such as the arts. While that’s incredibly important, to segregate creativity to fields that are often perceived as less important to civilization and society is to sell it short, and to deny the impact it has on all our lives.
