In my everyday bus rides to school, I am subjected to different social environments. As I go to school every day, I estimate approximately thirty people to be on the bus on weekdays and a fewer number on weekends and on public holidays. This means that copresence is not really an issue and people prefer and maintain their personal space. School is in the city, I take the route by the suburbs through the city, and the final stop is the school where there is a bus terminal nearby. I leave for school at a quarter to seven since I am supposed to be at school at seven and traffic at that time is not that bad so the bus takes around ten minutes to complete its course.
At the time am on my way to school the bus smells clean and fresh, attributing to the fact that it has been just washed, and the people on the bus are heading to work and are, therefore, well prepped to start a new day. I constantly see the commuters reading about current events either from the newspapers or from their mobile gadgets. A good number also takes hot beverages especially coffee at this times, I assume to kick-start their day or to keep away the morning cold. Some of the people on the bus catch up, mostly these are the younger generation on their way to school. They mostly talk about sports or the activities they undertook the previous nights. The working class also communicate to each other though not as much as the school going age. They talk about current issues like politics, tax, and the cost of living.
The populace on the bus is slightly dominantly male. The reason for this might be the fact that the corporate scene is dominantly male in this area. The female population on the bus is mostly kids going to school and parents taking the younger kids to school. Occasionally the commuters engage in a single discussion. This happens when an event affecting the lives of a majority of the people occurs. This might range from political events or a rise in taxes. Once or twice, the bus has had malfunctions. When this happens, it stirs a bit of chaos from the passengers who do not want to be late for getting to their destinations.
A group of the passengers is usually listening to music on their mobile phones and iPods. They usually use headphones to cancel out exterior noises. This group is usually withdrawn and is likely to keep quiet the whole way. Some of them close their eyes and only open them when the bus stops. These gadgets could be considered verbal search procedures. They hinder communication and social interaction and reveal just how much communication between people is assumed the norm. Their counterparts without the headphones are more observant of their surroundings, and I usually see then looking outside, talking with each other or doing something else to pass time while on the bus. Personally, I prefer when the majority of the people are engaged in a singular topic of discussion. The bus becomes lively, and I learn of things that might affect me that I could not have known about. In such an instance, people ignore cases of interactional vandalism and people interact freely regardless of their social status.
Normally people keep to themselves; the approximate distance between one person and the next is one foot since the bus is not full. People usually give personal space and expect the same too from the other commuters. I sat next to different people and yet there was room to give personal space. Their reactions were clearly uncomfortable, and they tended to move away or place an item, as a bag, to preserve personal space. I expected as much from them as I too respect my personal space. People who recognize each other do not have such strict boundaries, and they tend to sit close to each other so that they can keep their conversations to themselves.
