Dishonesty is one of the most challenging things that occur in relationships. It is so challenging that it brings out a sign of betrayal to the relationship, which happens especially when the relationship incorporates a man, and a woman who intend to marry in the near future or are already into marriage. Dishonesty and betrayal breaks relationships by cheating, lying, and manipulating. Relationships cannot be built on lies. Neither can it survive without trust and respect. Ideally, morals are among the most important elements of life according to the themes of the American dream. Engagement of this behavior fully discourages the art of honesty in a relationship and is one of the most irresponsible acts. In any relationship, honesty is the most important factor that leads to its success; this is because trust between partners is present. This means that any relationship that is built upon dishonesty and betrayal can never be successful in the end, as this paper will illustrate using examples from the novel The Great Gatsby.
Ideally, honesty is the backbone of every relationship. The beginning of every serous relationship starts with efforts to know each other’s whereabouts. This is the most influential sessions of a relationship. Taking the example of telling a lie about one’s health status is the most critical mistakes that make unknowingly. This takes course even to the deepest parts of the relationship. It is evident that current times bear people who are not ready to take responsibility for their relationships. As a result, a chain of lies leads to betrayal. In short, dishonesty starts with a minute lie and ends up as a series of lies. In that connection, one can tell that the relationship is not viable to last as long as expected. Then the relationship can be of absolute success.
If dishonesty takes course in a relationship, it becomes hard to reinstall trust among such people. This means that the possibility of a relationship not working is very high. Even if the relationship is given a chance to set itself free, it may take longer than expected. However, the result is either people live together but in the absence of trust or they live in eternal fear especially in the victim whose partner cheats on him or her. Such is the case in the relationship between Tom and Daisy. Since Daisy knew that her husband had already cheated on her, she felt it was equally fair that she exploited her feelings and advances made by Gatsby. Using this example, we would assume that if unfaithfulness was the order of the day, people might end up doing things that are completely out of order in the name of commonality.
The novel, The Great Gatsby indicates multiple betrayal and dishonest relationships. One of the most intriguing incidences of unfaithfulness is the dishonesty in the relationships of Nick, Daisy, Gatsby, and Tom. All the characters were deceitful and dishonest in different ways. Almost every relationship in The Great Gatsby is developed within lies. The majority of relationships are built around money, sex or either other wealth related privileges. For instance, Tom and Daisy have many issues in their marriage due to their dishonesty and betrayal. Tom cheated on his wife and withdrew all the trust, respect, and love in their relationship. Because of their deteriorated relationship, the sudden comeback of her old lover Gatsby encourages Daisy to pursue those feelings. This was because of the level of intensity in the love that existed between them. Gatsby throws all the outrageous parties just let Daisy visit. On the other hand, she betrayed her marriage with Tom with Gatsby. She was dishonest with her husband Tom about meeting Gatsby to an extent that she acts as if she does not know him. Daisy was also dishonest with Gatsby by making him believe that she would leave her husband and her family for him.
Gatsby also plays a very important role in developing dishonesty as a theme in relationships in the novel. Jay Gatsby the young eccentric millionaire, throws outrageous parties only to pursue daisy Buchanan, a married woman with a child knowing that he would ruin her family. Jay dedicated everything he had, emotionally, and physically, to win her love. The unrestrained and uncontrollable dishonesty that Jay develops essentially contributes to his downfall. He abandoned his poor family in a bid to make ends meet. His level of dishonesty is quite alarming. Not only does he lie about his identity and name, but also his job. As a result, he fabricates a completely new story of his life.
Nick Caraway, the novels narrator also has a role to play in dishonesty in the other relationships. After he was involved in the debauchery act, Nick makes endless efforts to avoid them. This makes him a significant factor in the dishonesty that exists between Tom, Jay, and Daisy. Throughout the novel, there are myriad cases that implicate the theme of dishonesty.
However, there are few honest relationships in the novel, despite the fact that the majority of relationships are built around money, sex, or among other privileges. Gatsby for example, is throughout the novel, known as the one who throws wild and lavish parties repeatedly. Despite his generosity, Gatsby, however, has his own intentions in throwing the wild parties: he seeks Daisy Buchanan whom he fell in love with years earlier. Therefore, there exists dishonesty within this relationship that leads to the possibility that the relationship could be torn apart. In the end, the relationship that was expected to succeed throughout the novel exists between Nick Caraway and Jay Gatsby. Nick’s affectionate and genuine care and concern for Gatsby, Daisy, and others is real and unpretentious.
The conversation between Tom and Jay Gatsby speaks volumes at to why the relationship between Tom and Daisy did not succeed. "You're crazy!" he exploded. "I can't speak about what happened five years ago, because I didn't know Daisy then—and I'll be damned if I see how you got within a mile of her unless you brought the groceries to the back door. But all the rest of that's a God damned lie. Daisy loved me when she married me and she loves me now." Tom expresses himself in a manner that suggests Daisy’s love is his possession and marriage is a form of ownership. He said that did not have a problem with Gatsby delivering groceries or driving her around but that is all he could get. This means that he was not offended by Daisy cheating on him with Gatsby behind the curtains but the public would not have wind of the affair. He deems himself as the controlling access for the feelings of his wife and who she would express them towards.
After taking an overall study within the novel the great Gatsby, dishonesty seems to be very common. That is why most of the marriages do not have a completely clean record of faithfulness. However, the dishonesty that exists between the couples in the novel is betrayal in nature. It is evident that most of the characters began their dishonesty in the very first conversations with the subject victims of cheating. For example, Jay Gatsby starts by making a categorical lie about his personal background to Daisy Buchanan. He did this in a bid to show her that he was capable of taking care of her financially. However, it is very clear that he does not win her. However, if this relationship were to hold, then it would not last for long before they would broke up. Dishonesty objects one of the major objectives of the American dream on the importance of good morals. Besides, it becomes impossible for trust to exist between dishonest partners. This essentially means that important relationships cannot be successful between unfaithful partners.
