Bike tipping trailer
Executive Summary
The bike is a transport vehicle used for more than one hundred years for transport, leisure and sports purposes. The bike enters in the category of blood-traction vehicles more effective in the market. With the bike, it is possible to achieve speeds from 10 km/h to 15 km/h in an urban area or speeds until 40 km/h in competitions. The bike, compared with other blood-traction vehicles are easy to use and available in department stores and the internet. The bike offer advantages to the user to have a cheap and low-maintenance transport mean that give long-term benefits to the health and the environment. The bike has the possibility to transport not only the driver but a connected trailer behind the bike. In many countries of the world, there are examples of passenger and merchandise transport using bikes. In metropolitan areas of several cities in Cuba, India, and Thailand the bike is used to move trailers with one or two people or a small charge of less than 200 kg. The safety for the charge, the driver and the other people in the environment is the key to the load transport using a bike.
The current investigation, sponsored by the Saudi International Petrochemical Company (Sipchem) has the goal to develop a safe and effective design of a tipping bicycle trailer for carrying chemicals inside industrial companies for short distances avoiding the use of cars and trucks. The design will consider constraints required by the industry and current legislation. The design will include static and dynamic material resistance considerations and will be complemented with a bill of materials, technical specifications and costs.
Conclusion
A bike tipping trailer results in a trustworthy and economical alternative for industrial companies that have site areas larger than five kilometers. The use of a bike inside the site guarantees to move a material or personnel bellow a ten-minute window without the use of a car, truck and fossil energy. The design required special considerations because the material transported by the bike tipping trailer are chemicals in the solid, liquid and gaseous state. The material for the manufacture of the trailer must be mechanically more robust than traditional manufacturers to avoid abrasion, corrosion or a breakage due to accidents or impacts. The design is simple, allowing the user to lock and unlock the trailer to the bike quickly using a hydraulic jack. The considered material for the bike tipping trailer was aluminum thanks to the strength resistance, malleability and rust resistance.
Ethical considerations
The design of the bike tripping trailer was made by the sponsorship of the Saudi International Petrochemical Company (Sipchem). The information developed in the design will be used only by the company or designers.
It is not allowed by the designers or Sipchem to use the design for other application, different to the "industrial use." The bike does not accomplish security rules for urban spaces and it is only authorized for secured and enclosed areas in industrial areas. The food transportation is forbidden for the bike tripping trailer.
The design accomplishes all the regulations of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Society for Testing and Materials and the American Petroleum Institute. The ASME rules the design strategy; the ASTM rules the material selection and the API the carriage of chemical products.
The design has the goal to support the reduction of greenhouse emissions to the atmosphere.
