Thesis
The historians and politicians present different reasons for the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq and the development of a global coalition to expel Saddam’s forces from Kuwait.
Among the reasons for the First Persian Gulf War, historians claim that the war was caused by Iraq’s historical claim on Kuwaiti region; Kuwait consistently failed to control their production quotas; Kuwait rejected Iraq’s request to lease bordering oil fields; Kuwait offered only $ 9 billion as damages for slant drilling; and Kuwait failed to respect the oil rates decided by the OPEC. The combination of these factors was hurting the Iraqi economy, at a time when Saddam was struggling to rebuild his country. Also, Iraq felt there was an ongoing conspiracy in the Middle East against them. Historians consider that the coalition forces were formed under US leadership after Iraqi army: conquered Kuwait and the royal family fled; reached the northern border of Saudi Arabia an important ally and oil supplier to the United States; chose not to leave Kuwait despite the threats from UN; and several countries provided funds and forces to expel Saddam’s forces.
