This is an issue that has been tried to be tackled from time in memorial. The cases of discrimination due to the person’s sex have always affected women the most in the society, from the workplace, down to their marriages and even families. The woman may always be looked at as a subordinate of a man, hence not being able to bag opportunities that she may be fully qualified to be given. This issue is among the major human rights and civil rights principles and must be adhered to in order to enable the woman to feel more human rather than a subordinate to the male gender. This essay will address the various instances of gender inequality in the USA be it in the schools, the job market or even simply how the society views women in the society today.
Inequality in Schools
Various projects have been set in place in order to ensure that the girl child is empowered and also to ensure they are given fair grounds to compete with their male counterparts. However, the truth of the matter’s that ladies in the schools are still discriminated due to their gender and may not be given equal opportunities like their male classmates and course mates. This is evident when it comes to the election days. Ladies will in most cases bag the Deputy seat rather than the President’s seat. This is due to the notion that leadership is a man’s job. They may have way better policies, but will not be voted into office only due to their gender.
In addition to this, when someone looks at the sports fraternity in the schools, the number of girl teams is no match to the male teams. This is so due to the fact that the male teams are always more in the schools as compared to the female teams and further the male teams will get more funding and better facilities as opposed to the female teams. This is mainly due to the notion that, sports is a male activity and the institution is more likely to get its returns from investing in the sports teams rather than investing in the female teams.
Inequality at the Work Place
This is one of the major sectors where women are really discriminated against. They are not given opportunities as such due to their gender. In addition to this, research has been able to stipulate that a lady will always earn 60% of what their male colleagues would earn. This is the fact that has been always denied by many employers who claim that they pay their employees the same amount or pay according to their job groups, but it is clear that this is not what is on the ground.
However, this is also the same field where the males are always discriminated against. This is due to the fact that the employers may always have the mentality that this is a female job. For example, when a company calls for applications for a certain job opening, let’s take nursing or the post of Human Resource Management, in most instances they will choose the female over the male even though in some instances the man may be more qualified.
General view of the society
Although various laws have been passed in order to protect the women in the society from any form of discrimination and abuse, this is not perfect. This is in the case that men in the society tend to still have the ‘The place of a woman is in the kitchen’ mentality. This means that the woman still has a negative reputation in the society
In addition to this, the males in the society tend to have over sexualized the female body and may further be blamed for the forms of gender discrimination that they may face. For example, they may be blamed for exposing too much in cases of rape . Further, they may be viewed to be on the wrong in instances that their families do not succeed as such. For example, it is not news to hear that a lady is blamed since her husband is adulterous or the mother is blamed for her daughter getting pregnant. So with these forms of discrimination, it is evident that the society still has a negative perception of the women in the society.
Conclusion
Even though various measures have been taken in order to ensure women in the society are not discriminated against, it is evident that there is still a lot to be done. So since using the statutes and legal processes has not been really effective, I am of the opinion that the society at large must be taught and helped to change their perception of women in order to eradicate this issue of discrimination in the society.
