Dear Sir,
I am , a student in your English 102 – Writing on Purpose class. I am writing this letter to tell you about the things I learned from your class, as well as the things I have experienced that contributed to who I am now as the semester ends.
Upon learning the class description, I felt both excited and scared about taking up this class. I was excited because writing is something that I have always wanted to learn, and scared because it is something that I am not comfortable doing. I am a foreigner and my first language is not English. I was worried about my grammar and vocabulary because even though I learned English, I was not confident about it. Sure, I can communicate and generally, I can understand what people are saying. However, writing is different because if I am wrong, it will be seen on the paper. In the end, I just resigned myself to my faith and looked forward to attending the class, fervently hoping that I won’t mess up.
When I started writing, I forgot about all my worries and simply focused on the task. Although I have so much more to learn, I am most proud of the fact that I was able to complete all the writing requirements. I struggled a lot with grammar and vocabulary, but I am happy that I was able to epress my ideas in my writing. Among the writing tasks I wrote, I was most proud of Essay #4. I was more free in writing the essay because it was all based on my interaction with the members of the club that was assigned to me. It was a chance for me to interview people and decide on which questions are important to ask in order to make my essay informative and interesting. Apart from what I learned about the organization, I also value the experience that I gained from joining them in regular Friday prayer meeting. It was an opportunity for me to learn about their culture and through the experience, I gained new friends.
Since I am not very good in English yet, I focused on strengthening my ideas instead. I would write down everything I want to discuss in the essay and remove those that I think are not relevant to my topic. That way, I am sure that there is a central idea in my essay. At the same time, it made my research easier because I know what I had to find. After writing, I reviewed what I wrote and made sure that it turned out the way I envisioned it to be, with all my ideas in it and all my citations were correct. This is why most of my revisions were on mechanics, specifically grammar, word use, and punctuation. Surprisingly, it was not very difficult to find the right words to use because I had with me my ever-dependable dictionary. In the process, I also got to learn new words which I added to my vocabulary.
This writing class was a new and welcomed experience for me. Despite my fears, I would like to think that I did quite well in the class. I am proud of all my work, but most of all, I am proud that I was able to push myself beyond my limitations. I always think that there is something more in me that I have yet to discover, and this is one of them. I am made of sterner stuff, and when I put my mind into doing something, I am confident that I will be able to do it. I hope that through my essays, you are also able to see these changes in me. Thank you for giving me a wonderful writing experience.
