In the hospital setup, medical practitioners are often faced with critical and ethical decisions to make. In the case study, the doctor is facing a plethora of ethical dilemma and is not sure what cause of action to take. In the practice of medicine, several issues often arise as a result of wanting to make critical decisions. However, there are always moral theories at play under such circumstances.
The theory in use in the case study is deontological theory and virtue ethics theory. The deontological theory takes center stage in the dilemma the Doctor is subjected. The theory in its prime uses the existing rules as a precedent for decision-making. In the case, the doctor draws his deductions from the existing moral obligation that gives the patient a right to be told the truth. Using the rule, he decides that Jessica must know the actual outcome of diagnostics.
Deontology uses set certain rules to help give a guideline for taking a particular decision. According to the theory, the decision of a doctor is manifested on the moral responsibilities owed to the patient. The doctor has the moral obligation to remain truthful to the patient and serve them with honesty. Therefore, Dr. Wilson defies the wishes of the husband to convey the actual results to Jessica.
The theory I agree with
I wholly agree with deontological theory. There are set of ethical principles that often serve to influence decision-making in the situations of a moral dilemma. Practitioners have the moral duties to their clients who is usually the patient. In this, it is important to take actions in conformity with the moral expectations of actions. Thus, it is paramount to have decisions based on some ideologies like responsibility. The theory would have an enormous influence on every ethically interesting case.
