Last year, our Music Club in school decided to organize a fund-raising concert for the benefit of the poor members of the school’s community. Being one of the officers of the club, I had to take part in the decision-making process on how to sell tickets for the concert. There were several suggestions from both the officers and members of the club. One suggestion that came up was to print posters and post them in the school bulletin boards. The posters will be done by a printing company; thus, will entail some cost for the Club. Another suggestion was to give away flyers among the students to inform them about the concert. The third option was to simply post or tweet about the event in social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, so that the word could spread fast. Under this option, the Club will not incur any expense, yet the message will reach a great number of students. Another alternative presented was for the Club to advertise in the local radio stations. Furthermore, it was also suggested that tie-ups be made with the community’s music stores so that they can advertise the concert.
It was so easy to be overwhelmed with the numerous alternatives that came up. At first, one was at a lost as to how to go about the promotion of the concert. But later on, the Club met and looked carefully at each option. The Club weighed the alternatives according to the pros and cons of each suggestion. It was decided that the option that must be taken should be that which will generate the most sales with the less expense. In the end, the Club chose to advertise through social networking sites and to create our own posters.
This decision-making experience made me become a critical thinker. It taught me how to analyze situations to come up with the best decision. I also appreciated the opportunity to be part of the decision-making group because I learned how to argue and at the same time compromise. The next time I will be placed in a similar situation, it will be easier for me to go through the process of decision-making.
