I guess that every moment in this deal is important but if taking into consideration I have to choose only 3, I will pick up the most important and influential, in my humble opinion. The first two are the checklists which have names Planning a Contracting Meeting and Reviewing the Contracting Meeting. These two stages are similar in intentions and even actions but they differ in one thing – the first stage is aimed at determining a plan and the second one is for discussing what was done already and how it should be improved.
In these stages, a client and a consultant meet and discuss their views on the current deal. Since it is not their first meeting, they both just review their positions and correct them so that both sides are satisfied after getting the product. As they still can have different views on the solutions of existing or occurring problems, they discuss their responsibilities one more time and talk about possible defaults on the responsibilities of both sides. Finally, they plan what to do in the next stages and what will be discussed during the next meeting. The third checklist is Reviewing the Discovery Meeting since it helps to discover the issues which should be fixed and improved to the best extend so that the client feels satisfied and glad to see the product as he/she imagined from the very beginning.
All these mentioned elements helped me to discover deeper all the stages in a project work. It gave me a clear understanding how to fulfill the client’s wishes and needs, especially how with the help of the questions in the simple checklist I realized what the client has in the head and how these future products should be done. The project may be defined as successful one when there are no wasted resources from the sides – both client’s and consultant’s. Every checklist and every question included in it has its own peculiarity and makes you closer to the perfection of the project. By using with the checklist, nothing is impossible since every complicated and confusing deal has an accurate stage to follow in order to make it easier and understandable.
As I have mentioned before, completing the checklists give you an opportunity to make a process easier to follow and improve afterward. Moreover, working in a team is the best opportunity for the projects. Since everyone has their own view on the project, its problems, and the solutions, the brainstorming process can bear lots of useful and creative ideas which finally will make the project better. The critic, also, is the essential and inevitable part of team work upon the project. We can’t notice mistakes which have been made by us, therefore, the others should ‘proof-read’ on every stage, analyze, and advise how to change it. This feedback should be done after every stage, even the smallest one since it excludes making mistakes. Moreover, on every team, there’s a spirit of competition. This kind of working competition just increases the volumes of the process and makes everything in a very thorough and even perfect way. They say ‘Nothing is Perfect!’, I say ‘Nothing is impossible, especially when you want to beat someone!’.
However, some actions cannot be limited strictly to the checklist since they should be found out of the box. These actions should be in the very beginning of the process as they include the artistic side of the project. I do believe that it is hard, even impossible to make your brain produce genius and talented ideas. The process, where inspiration and even some kind of the muse are needed, cannot be controlled. It goes without saying that we can try to control everything but this task has too much risk to be done. After giving some time and inspiring atmosphere, you can produce brand new ideas, which will surprise and even shock not only you and your team, but also your clients.
On the other hand, I suppose that this process is the only one which can have some freedom in it since there are some phenomena which cannot be controlled. Otherwise, it is controlled, it can be too trite has too many clichés in it or has too many mistakes and confusions even for their creators.
The most important lesson from Block is authenticity. You have to be original in the world of fakes. This originality will help you with your clients since they will remember you afterward. Being authentic means doing everything in a proper and right manner but including a piece of your vivid personality in every case you will face with. This authenticity shows your real attitude. Therefore, clients want to work with a consultant with genuine intentions and bright ideas more than with a dull manager who does everything in a standardized, overused and even boring way. Clients appreciate this special attitude to them and their cases since they want to be special, they can feel it by noticing your authenticity.
The next lesson which is influential is flawless consulting. It is understandable that nothing is flawless and perfect but your attitude and actions have to be flawless. You can establish a good and comprehensive relationship with your clients. You can solve all the problems in a thorough way and ensure that you and your team have paid enough time, and attention to every detail, element or even detail which can occur during the process of creation and development of the whole project. You should have good relationship with your client since this relationship is fundamental and it can improve or fail your project.
Finally, the last lesson is about the structure of business. As I have mentioned, following this checklist makes your project easier to make but it’s also easier to establish a good relationship. This structure has several stages. The first stage is setting up the initial meeting with the client. Second is determining their needs and requirements, after this one, the third is attempting to establish what the problem is. In this easy and structured way, the main elements are established and both sides realize how the work should be done in a nutshell.
After that, the project and the relationship, established in the terms of the running project, have an elaborating and collaborative manner. Since every side sees the project in their own way, the consultant should explain the client possible ways of solution and actions which may be seemed better for both sides and especially for the project. Finally, the consultant should ask for feedback from the client and explain every decision and actions done for the project’s sake. The consultant, also, has to control every stage in order to be sure that everything will be done according to the client’s requirements.
The whole process is extremely complicated as it includes lots of aspects and processes. But there are a few things which may make this process understandable for both client and a consultant. There should be a well-established relationship in the terms of the project which has an enormous influence on the process and product of the project. This relationship is credential since your client can help you to fulfill all his needs and wishes or he can confuse you more without giving the smallest hints.
Second, you should always ask for help, especially some rational critic, analysis, and feedback. Being too confident can spoil all your work and the work of your team. There can be a lot of possible solutions to a single problem, so don’t concentrate on the same way. Every stage should be checked and controlled so that you may improve and make it perfect afterward. Finally, the most important advice is to put a piece of your personality and brightness in every project you have. Besides the structure, this vivid side of you will make every client remember this project as special, so you will have a good relationship which can be useful in near future and you will have respect and reputation in your sphere.
