Drug and substance abuse are a social problem present in every community. Some of the organization set to address this social issue includes the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). This organization is an organ of United Nation. The member states established the UNODC to assist their local community addressing the issue of crime that emanates from drug abuse. This organization focuses on interrelated issues that seek to prevent crime and the use of illegal drugs (Leon- Guerrero, 2012). This organization has fashioned its mandate that focuses on three pillars.
In the first pillar, UNODC performs research and analytical work to understand the reason a nation struggles with drug abuse and crime. In the second pillar, this organization assists member countries to ratify and implement international treaties. These treaties develop local countries legislation on crime and drugs (Crone, 2012). UNODC provides a secretariat in every member country to oversee the implementation of the treaty. In the third pillar, this organization is instrumental in providing technical assistance to the member countries to help in countering the activities of crime and substance abuse (Leon- Guerrero, 2012). The organization initiates projects in the member countries to enhance capacity building.
This organization works in a joint effort with other NGOs to influence civic responsibility among the public. UNODC works with NGOS in countering the issue of substance abuse and instances of crime in the country. This organization actively engages the civil society to counter the issue crime and drugs by encouraging the participation of key stakeholders to fight this social problem. The collaboration effort allows the formulation and implementation of technical projects. The organization has gone a notch higher to set 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse (Crone, 2012). UNODC calls upon the NGOs so as to participate in contributing towards realizing a society that is free of substance abuse by starting health initiatives rather than the consumption of drugs. This organization targets the popular culture since are the most victims of drug abuse.
The Canada Drug Strategy (CDS is a government organization in Canada that relents in treating and controlling the abuse of drugs together with other illicit substances (Leon- Guerrero, 2012). The Federal government coordinates the CDS to address the harmful effects and the economic repercussion when people abuse drugs. CDS works in collaboration with NGOs, territorial governments, and other professional bodies. CDS addresses the issue of drug abuse by working on the following pillars: educating, preventing, treating, rehabilitation, Research, and International Corporation. CDS prohibits the use and abuse of drugs and other psychoactive substances.
The people that use psychoactive substances are morally unstable, and legal sanctions can control their behavior (Leon- Guerrero, 2012). The users of psychoactive substances are sick and in need of medical attention to control their behavior. In the pillar of educating people to prevent the use of substance abuse, CDS identifies the problem of abuse to affect the youth adults. This organization works with territorial government sector in educating the youth. This initiative targets the high-risk populations by using the media to campaign for good health policies. These kinds of programs create awareness of the harmful substances to motivate people to lead healthy and safe lives (Crone, 2012). In the pillar of treatment and rehabilitating victims of drug abuse, CDS collaborates with the local community in facilitating initiatives. The organization applies many treatment and rehabilitation approaches. For each service provider, the goal is to ensure abstinence of drug and substance abuse. The treatment and rehabilitation programs identify therapeutic interventions to treat some groups. Some programs treat the addiction of a substance while others address the mental health and substance use disorder. For a long time, the treatment of opioids addiction has proved difficult to treat. This has led to the development of methadone or heroin administered under strict supervision. This organization works in a joint effort with other organs to achieve a free society from substance and drug abuse.
