I feel it necessary to explain the low GPA that appears on my undergraduate degree. When I first came to this country I was very shy and all alone. I had just broken up with my boyfriend and my grandmother had passed recently. As English was my second language I had a difficult time communicating with others. Until our split my boyfriend had been helping me to learn English. He was very supportive and the parting was particularly difficult.
I also had financial issues that impeded me from performing as well as I am able in my studies. All these factors put together made life difficult for me in the years during which I first came to the USA. Being in a new country and having to cope with many different issues all at once is a very tiring and overwhelming experience was a serious impediment to my studies. Thankfully I found the necessary support and was able to halt the overall decline of my GPA.
Years later I have returned after graduating with a substandard GPA. I have managed to renew my dedication to my studies and have raised my GPA to 3.93, which is a substantial improvement. I have been placed upon the Dean’s List as well as the honor roll, and am a member of the Kappa Honor Society. It is humbling to recall how I first came to this country, and it has reinvigorated me to strive for something better. I am grateful to have come this far with my education, and wish to use it to the fullest extent.
My love of studying has led me towards volunteer work and even earned me glowing
praise from several professors. I have come a long way from being the shy, uncommunicative
person I used to be, and am all the better for it. Through hard work and determination I have
rectified the situation I found myself in earlier in my studies, and have greatly improved my
situation. The situation I found myself in as a younger student is regrettable, but with so many
factors working against me it is understandable that I could be more than a little distracted.
