Life in Colonial America was created on the back of rich plantation owners such as William Byrd and indentured servants who were contracted to serve their rich masters and live in the harshest conditions. Catholics and Protestants were offered work and land to come to America and make a new and better life for them. With the creation of new colonies and the promise of free land and work in the plantations, several poor English migrants came to the new world as indentured servants.
Among them was George Aslop who believed that life as an indentured servant was better as craftsmen, as they were not sent to the field to work for the plantation owners. Also, him being trained craftsmen in England, he experienced a better life than most handicrafts back home in London. Even though they are slaves, they are treated well, even by their masters.
There were other people like Richard Frethorne who faced the worst of experiences in his new country. He lived in the worst possible conditions and witnessed disease and death around him, with most of his shipmates from England dying within three months of their indenture. He even requests his parents to buyout his indenture and save his life from the worst conclusion.
Finally, people such as William Byrd, who were rich plantation owners lived a life of luxury and limited work. They owned slaves and used to whip them when they felt like. William Byrd was an epitome of the rich plantation owner and his life by reading his favorite literature and religious texts.
In such a way, life in the new world was better for rich plantation owners who had indentured servants to work for them and craftsmen who, despite being servants, were treated better by everyone including their masters. But, life was worse for indentured servants who came over in search of work, but learned that American servitude came with disease and death.
