Mechanical engineering is a field science which is concerned with the design and analysis of structures as well as the development of devices, machines and mechanical systems. The field of mechanical engineering uses the principles of engineering, material science, thermodynamics and physics in order to design and analyse structures and machines. Mechanical engineering overlaps with the other engineering fields such as chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering and many others. The core concepts included in the field of mechanical engineering includes solid mechanics, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. Other principles included in the field are computer-aided design, nanotechnology and mechatronics.
Mechanical engineers could be employed in to a wide range of government and industrial sectors. Mechanical engineers could work at industrial plants. They could use their knowledge to design and analyse machine and other plant equipment such as storages automatic control systems. Mechanical engineers could also work in government sectors as inspector of equipment and machines. They could also work in the academe and teach students who are taking up Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Mechanical engineers could also incorporate their knowledge regarding computer-aided engineering. With this knowledge, they could analyse and design several industrial processes. Lastly, mechanical engineers could also be researchers within their field and develop new technologies.
The design activity performed in the class could relate to most of the engineering fields especially with the mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineering is a field where physics and engineering principles are most important. Mechanical engineers are concerned with the design and analysis of structures or machines. The design activity which is performed in class could help students understand the basic works of a mechanical engineer.
One of the projects which could be suitable for the field of mechanical engineering is the manufacture of vehicle parts. There are various types of vehicles such as diesel-engine vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles. The manufacturing process of these vehicles could be a suitable work for mechanical engineers. The mechanical engineers have sufficient knowledge regarding thermodynamics and the design and analysis of machine parts. They could work as designers and inspectors of machines or equipment used in the manufacturing process of vehicle parts. Mechanical engineers could also design and inspect the vehicle parts themselves. They could use their knowledge in solid mechanics and fluid mechanics in order to create or evaluate the vehicle parts for a new type of vehicle.
Another project which could be suitable for the field of mechanical engineering is the design and installation of an air-conditioning system of the building. Mechanical engineers could use their knowledge in the field of thermodynamics in order to design the air-conditioning system within a building. They could also optimize the design in order for the air-conditioning system to be economical, effective and efficient. The mechanical engineers also have enough knowledge with regards to renewable energy and they could incorporate it with their designs.
One of the interesting facts about mechanical engineering is that it has a wide variety of possible career path. It is also a field of engineering which overlapped with several fields of engineering which could be advantageous. It is not my major and I also have no plans in considering changing it. However, it could be a suitable choice if I have to change majors.
