The researchers mostly define the homunculus as an area of the brain where different functions of the human body are mapped out. These different parts of the body had been mapped out different scientists through extensive research, and the start of this research was in 1930 when Wilder Penfield and his colleagues stimulated the brain using electrical impulses to first map out the different areas of the brain which controlled different functions of the various body parts.
These are findings that have been made possible by studying repeatedly the brains that lose their ability to function normally. Through this research, we have found out that through the same process of stimulation, we can try to regulate the brain to move the body if not fully then to some limited extent like an average brain can. Through the same research and experimentation, many scientists have been able to help many of the patients to functions parts of the body that had previously lost movement ability.
The brain is a very interesting organ, and much of our survival depends upon it. If we can learn to control it only a little bit of not to complete extent, we could achieve wonders in the field of mental and physical health.
