Nowadays the divorce rate in the US is quite high. Speaking about cohabitation, there are the same problems, especially if a couple has children. I choose cohabiting long term but I think that the likelihood of my family’s disruption would be less than 50%. I would estimate it at 30%, paying attention to different risk factors which can cause separation. These factors should be considered when we speak about relationships, cohabitation, marriage and divorce. One of the risk factors is young marriage. I am sure that I will be grown-up and independent enough when I decide to cohabit with my partner. Young couples are sometimes too rash to start a family. People change; and over the years or even months partners may become different. I am positive that it will not destroy my relationships. Besides, some couples start a family because of pregnancy, which is never a good reason to cohabit or marry. A good spouse and a good parent are absolutely different roles which demand different actions and responsibility therefore cohabitation and marriage can be unhappy if they take place only because of children. I will do my best to start my family only because of love. Unhappiness is one more risk factor of dissolution and I will try really hard to maintain love and happiness in my relationships.
Of course, there can be conditions which increase the likelihood of separation. For instance, my partner may be from a single-parent family; and parental divorce makes their children’s divorce more possible. We can also somehow change our habits or world view over the years. Individuality is now very important in a family so personal changes can also lead to disruption but, generally speaking, people who cohabit for a long time with one partner before marrying him or her have the lowest chance to get a divorce. So if I and my partner want to get married one day after a long cohabitation, we will be almost sure our relationships can survive it.
