There was no preliminary interviews done with the group members which could have brought to light the possible conflict that would arise from joining Brooks with his management style of traditional and formal where communication traveled vertically through the hierarchy with Gantman whom had a management style that stressed the value of open communication channels to promote teamwork and collaboration.
It was assumed that Brook's strengths would complement Gantman's weaknesses and not known that the two had a history of conflict that had been ignored and never addressed. There was no teamwork or respect between the two and they actually sabotaged each others accomplishments and therefore, the production for the corporation.
Marilyn Young, the vice president for information services was aware of the conflict and requested the assistance of the human resource manager. The HR manager and OD specialist met with each separately to obtain understanding of their conflict and then suggested several strategies to Young. What resulted was the OD specialist making agreements between the two of the process. Young did not follow through and sent mixed messages to the two in conflict that were inconsistent. Young supported Brooks and criticized Gantman,Gantman eventually felt defeated and left the corporation.
The end result of this was a loss of trust for management that trickled down to all levels of employees which caused a loss of morale and productivity.
The description of this conflict and how it was handled does not match the process model in the text at all. The process model would encourage coaching and communication. I believe I would not have sided with either party and kept mutual as I coached them and encouraged communication between them. Coaching should have been provided to assure both parties that they were both valuable assets to the corporation and although they had different styles they could enhance each other with their individual qualities and each would excel and thus the corporation production would. Communication is vital in a situation such as this one to understand the other.
Management should never break the trust of the employees that they will not be a fair unpartial leader, but a leader that will assit with conflicts and issues to build communication and teamwork.
