My opinion is that in schools they have to consider what is appropriate dress. Many studies indicate that students who dress appropriately and show pride in their appearance have a more positive educational experience. Besides feeling and acting better, schools have dress polices that educators designed to protect students. That is why some schools have banned gang colors and paraphernalia as part of a school ensemble. Having students dressed appropriately in school leads to an environment in which the students can concentrate on their studies and learn the importance of self-discipline and decision-making.
I think that poorly dressed applicants can forget about getting a job. Employers are not going to hire someone who shows up for an interview dressed in a fashion that indicates they have no respect for others. People who dress better feel better about themselves. If they look professional, they are more apt to act professional. If they dress like someone who care about their performance and success they are more likely to achieve their goals.
Some guys say that wearing saggy pants is their right because it’s cultural and it’s what guys in prison who don’t have belts wear. So they have made accusations of racism. I do not know if banning saggy pants is racially motivated or not, but the style reveals something about the way the wearer perceives himself. Psychological studies have demonstrated that wearing inappropriate clothing in the midst of others who are more traditionally dressed indicates insecurity and even hostility. Those around the person who is dressed inappropriately will automatically judge them based on their clothing and conclude that the saggy pants wearer has little decorum. I can sort of understand why the Atlanta city council banned saggy pants in public. It was because they thought it was obscene and added to the indecency laws already on the books in Georgia. The saggy pants amendment prohibits saggy pants that expose underwear to be worn in public. That type of dress is now the same crime as having sex or of fondling ones genitals in a public place. If they think they need a law to stop people from exposing their underwear and buttocks in public that should be a sign to those people that others do not find this behavior acceptable. Many people are offended by this style of pants. Wearing pants that are dragging around your ankles is a sign that you do not have a job, do not care what other people think of you, and have no respect for parents with small children. It may also mean that the person wearing these prison style think of themselves as gangsters. They could end up making real gangsters angry. I do not see the ban on saggy pants as racial profiling against young black men. That would be like saying that all young black men want to dress as if they are in prison or are gangsters and that is not the case. There are more young black men who are respectful, have jobs, do well in school, etc. than there are young black gangsters. This ban has nothing to do with being racist against young black men who show off their boxers in public. Furthermore, the underpants prohibition would apply to females as well. It would make it illegal for women to show their underwear in public, thons in particular are a grave concern for the Atlanta City council. It would also ban women from wearing job bras in public or wearing tops that reveal their bra straps.
I’ve seen girls at restaurants who look fine in tiny tops and sundresses. But guys who wear ripped up t-shirts, flip-flops, and cut-offs usually don’t look so good in public. I can understand why cafes want people to dress appropriately. A girl may look cute in a tiny outfit but a hairy guy does not. And it’s not appetizing to see their unkempt feet. I also understand that the person who dresses shabbily to a café feels he is paying the same as everyone else and so he should dress the way he is comfortable. Most cafes and restaurants are super casual these days. So if someone is not wearing proper attire they are probably pretty far over the line as far as being dress appropriately goes. I don’t think it’s too much for a restaurant to require clean jeans and a shirt and shoes.
