Racial segregation was a big problem in the U.S than it is now especially in the south. Everything from the hotels, waiting rooms, restaurants, schools and even the military were either for the whites or blacks but they never shared. The blacks were stopped from voting in the ruling that was made in the cases of Plessey v. Fergusson and William v. Mississippi (1896).The blacks were intimidated by introducing the poll tax and the formation of the Ku Klux Klan that was mandated in killing the blacks. Even the police and the legal system supported the racial discrimination. The introduction of the Jim Crow Laws promoted the racial discrimination the more especially in the south.
The black Americans in the south didn’t not sit down and do nothing about this racial segregation, they tried their best to eliminate the segregation and this was done by the establishment of the civil right movement to fight for their rights. The movement led the demonstration against the Jim Crow laws. For instance the blacks could get in the white hotels and restaurants and just sit and not leaving even when they are asked to leave. This was the policy that was also used by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in 1942 that was led by Gandhi and it used non violent methods such as sit in buses and trains.
The blacks also formed the organizations such as the NAACP in 1909 which gave the black people an avenue to hold meetings to plan legal as well as political actions against segregation. The formation of the southern Christian leadership conference (SCLC) in 1957 led a prayer march of about 25,000 people to the Lincoln memorial where the speakers advocated for non violent struggles, work slowdowns and strikes so as to pressure the government to abolish segregation. This fight against the racial segregation was also boosted by the formation of the SNCC in 1960 and became also a powerful tool force for civil rights that also advocated for non violent means such voters’ registration drives and boycotts and the release blacks arrested in the demonstrations. As a result, these movements led to the reduction of the racial segregation the U.S especially in the south.
