Young adults engage in sexual activity for a myriad of reasons ranging from peer pressure to the desire to be seen as normal even to the wrong kind of sex education in schools and at home. Peer pressure is one of the main reasons why young adults engage in sex. The young adults have a desire to fit in with their friends and not to be seen as different or less cool. They are likely to engage in sexual activity because everyone else is doing it. Another reason is the frequent sexual messages and images in all kinds of media including television, radio, songs, billboards and magazines. It is impossible to through a whole day without a young adult encountering some form of sexual images or innuendo from the various forms of media. Also, young adults are at a point where they are drinking and experimenting with other drugs. A young adult under the influence of alcohol is likely to lose all inhibitions and engage in sexual activity. Other reasons are boredom, permissive parents, sexual attraction and the desire to be loved.
Young adults do not use contraceptives because they do not have enough information concerning the various kinds of contraceptives available. Lack of adequate information means they will either not use any contraception while engaging in sexual activity or if they do, then they would use it incorrectly and defeat its purpose (Neergaard). Some young people engage in sex while drunk or under the influence of other drugs and are too out of it to remember to use contraception. Others do not use condoms as a contraceptive because they feel the sex does not feel as good with a condom. Other reasons include the misconception that contraceptives always fail at some point and if one is meant to get pregnant, they will even though contraceptives are used. The basic reason is that there is a significant lack of education on contraceptive use (Marcotte).
