Six discussion questions
Chapter 2
1. In page number 24 of chapter 2, it is stated that “adolescence is a period when young people become more detached to their parents and attempt to establish self identity”. My question is, taking the lead from the chapter, Joaquin’s Dilemma, how exactly can a parent help their child in overcoming the problems of adolescence and stay focused on their goals?
2. In page number 28 of chapter 2, the researcher has made linkages between “acting white” and academic success “among black students and non voluntary minorities”. In your opinion do you think “acting white” has a significant role in the academic success of the minorities in multi cultural set up? Provide rationale for your answer.
3. In page no 33 of chapter 2, the researcher has mentioned about overcoming “anti academic tendencies”. Do you think “anti academic tendencies” can be overcome easily? Who all have to play a major role in overcoming “anti academic tendencies” and how?

4. In page 82 of chapter 5, it is written that, “students view their lessons as the teacher’s work”. Do you think that is true in all schools? How can that scenario be changed and bring student’s focus on academic excellence?
5. In page 84 of chapter 5, the researcher claims that “all relational experiences are profoundly educational on multiple levels”. Do you believe that the statement made by the researcher is true and why? If so, what are the changes that need to be done in the educational systems?
6. In page 90 of chapter 5, Selman has pointed out the role of interpersonal relationships have molding an individual’s capability. What is your opinion in this regard and what is the extent of influence interpersonal relationships have on an individual?
