Investigate the history of slavery and discuss the ways in which this history impacts contemporary society
Introduction
The laws in a nation are in most cases brought about due to historic events. However, a large number of the members of our society tend either not to have a clear understanding or rather knowledge of the history of our nation. This, in turn, leads them not to have a sense of identity and end up contravening the laws of the nation due to the fact that they may take these laws for granted due to them not having an understanding of how they came about. One of these historic issues that may be said to be taken for granted is the issue of slavery. A large percentage of the society deem it as a historic act that needs to be forgotten and might even be seen to be a taboo talking about it. In this project, I will investigate the history of slavery in various nations in the world and further go ahead and lay down its impact on the society today.
As earlier explained this history of slavery in the nation will enable the members of the society have a better understanding of the various effects of slavery in the nation and further this will help ensure that the members of the society respect the various laws and statutes that have been put in place to ensure that slavery was completely abolished in the nation. This essay will mostly rely on the findings that the Steering Committee of Brown University (2003) on the issues of slavery and justice. From this work, the various historical events will be well laid down together with the issue of justice for the slaves have been clearly laid down and hence this comparison will enable us to understand is these issues are still evident in our society today. The argument that has always been tabled is the fact that slavery has just taken a new form and mainly it is likened to the oppression that the Black and Hispanic community undergo in the day to day activities. A group is of the opinion that the issue of slavery is a done with issue while another group is of the opinion that the issue is still there in the society today and needs addressing. This project will enable the members of the society to know the various ways that the members of the society have been affected by this issue.
This project will first depend on the issue of historical development of slavery in the world as a whole. After this general history, the project will dwell on the issue of the specific history of slavery in the United States and its impact on the society at that time. This will also entail the various factors that led to it rising in the nation and its effect on the society at that time. This will then be followed by the issue of the legal provisions that allowed for slavery to be part of the society and later the laws and factors that led to its abolishment. Lastly, the project will then dwell on the various ways that slavery has impacted our society today.
