Introduction
Tesla Motors is an energy storage and automotive company based in the United States. The company basically sells electric vehicle powertrain, electric cars and also battery products. Tesla is a public company. It trades in the NASDAQ stock exchange. The company was able to post profits for the first time in the first quarter of 2013. This paper is aimed at explaining how Tesla applies teamwork in its operations.
In January 2014, the number of full-time employees at Tesla had grown to 6000 from only 3000 in 2012. Everything from the innovative process to the manufacturing line at Tesla is a team activity. The company hires passionate workers who will work together to deliver only the best outcomes. Tesla employees at different levels of the company’s structure as well as in different departments have to work together not only as a necessity of the production line, but so as to share knowledge and experiences. The Tesla factory requires people to work in teams in different levels of assembly especially in automotive manufacturing. Management also works as a cohesive unit or a team for the smooth running of Tesla Motors. (Tesla Motors, 34).
Tesla utilizes teamwork in many aspects of its operations. The company’s CEO, Elon Musk reported that Tesla would be teaming up with BMW. The latter would be providing Tesla with cost efficient carbon fiber parts for its cars. He also reported that there were ongoing talk between said parties on areas of charging stations and battery technology. Teamwork between Tesla and BMW has benefited both parties. Tesla has been able to cut their manufacturing costs while BMW now has the capacity to develop electric vehicles at a fair price. There has also been a collaboration between Tesla and Toyota in 2010 which led to an expansion in Tesla’s assets as well as shared knowledge between the two companies in the line of development of a production system, vehicle parts and also engineering support. (Tesla Motors, 63).
