Nichols argues that lovers of documentaries are meant to enjoy both the documentary aspects as a film and as a form of philosophy. Therefore, understanding the role that people play when developing solutions for films is one of the main ways through which documentaries have been noted for playing a significant role in enforcing the way people think and what they view. As such, creating numerous problems is developing a love for the documentary. In this context, documentaries play a major role in contributing to our understanding of various problems in the society whereas movies play a role in building a new culture.

Differentiating between reality and the shadow-play is the main difference between movies and documentaries. Understanding the relationship between image and the imaginary makes the image seem to have a key influence in the way that people perceive movies and differentiate them from fiction. The article further describes the modes through which documentaries have managed to grow exponentially and develop a great audience. Understanding the modes of communication that most movies take, as well as the issues that are directly related to the manner in which the documentary is viewed by the audience all rely mainly on the manner in the filmmaker decides to make the movie. There are several modes namely, the institutional mode, the expository mode, the observation mode, the interactive mode, and the reflexive mode of representation. As such, it is evident that there are several approaches to making a documentary, and the level of brilliance of the film involves ensuring that the organizations are performing at an optimum rate.
