The railroaded fabric’s design runs horizontally across while up the bolt’s pattern runs up the fabric roll. It is important to notice the difference as the positioning of the fabric may lead to changes in design appearance.
Knife-edge is the method of uniting pieces of fabric; welting is the process in which a cord wrapped in fabric is inserted into the stitch, while boxing is the completely covered fabric strip from the front and cushion sides.
In-the-muslin refers to the pieces of furniture decorated in plain white muslin cloth.
Upholstered furniture has two different ways of attaching the cushions onto the wooden framework. For instance, if customers wanted a secure and permanent cushions, they should chose the tight-pillow styles; whereas, in the loose-pillow method, the cushions are not properly attached onto the framework making it less secure and more prone to removing easily.
Aside from their ergonomic support, arm covers not only make the arm rest comfortable but also the cover prevents the excessive abrasion of the furniture framework. Additionally, the headrest covers support the neck and the head for maximum relaxation and comfort by providing a soft cushion. Aside from that, the cushion also prevents the transfer of hair chemicals and body sweat onto the furniture framework.
In buying sofas, I would definitely recommend the plush cushions because it is soft and fluffy compared to the foam and spring cushions. For the hard layer, it is best to select a framework made of steel or wood depending on the client’s choice. For ultimate comfy feeling, the soft layer of the furniture should have a polyester fiber covering for the attenuated foam core. The pros of selecting this type of cushions is that the texture and softness of the cushions is akin to a real pillow but the cons of using this furniture is the maintenance to fluff the whole sofa and throw pillows after use.
Compressional resiliency is the ability of the cushion to retain its original shape after being subjected to various weights; loftiness is the way a cushion can to present itself as bulky in appearance but with reduced weight. Compressibility is the characteristic of a cushion that allows the material to be reduced in size, volume, and thickness easily by sitting.
The flammability of the materials is subjected to different levels of heat to determine which stage is most likely the cushion will catch a fire. (FAA.gov).
Skins are not used in upholstery because it is a material derived from small animals such as lambs; meanwhile, hides are typically used in upholstery because of their large size approximately about 25 feet. This material is gathered from butchering horses and other large animals.
Split leather originated from the center part of the hide; full grain leather has natural imperfections due to the grain markings whereas top-grain leather was originally full grain leather that has undergone modifications to refine its outside appearance.
C.O.M. means Customer’s Own Material. (A Little Design Help, “What Does “COM” or “COL” Mean?”).
Commercial furniture tend to be simpler because these are made in accordance to the rules and standards issued by the governing body. For instance, aircraft cushion is simpler and has a uniform design because most of the materials used in this type of cushion needs to be fire and heat resistant.
