Introduction
In the United States, once an individual hears about immigration, what goes through his or her mind is poor and uneducated people, in search of greener pastures for a better life in their country. The United States since the nineteenth century has recorded a high number of immigrants coming to America every year. Different factors motivate immigration; some escape from wars and persecutions from their home countries, while others see America has the only place whereby they can make all their dreams come true. This paper seeks to explain the plights of the immigrants in America in the late-century America.
The Immigrants’ Experiences Late-Nineteenth and Early-Twentieth Century
The Late-Nineteenth and Early-Twentieth Century saw immigrants suffer at the hands of the Americans. The immigrants were subjected to miserable and degrading working conditions. They worked in the slaughterhouses, which were dangerous places as numerous people died in accidents. The wages earned by the immigrants could not support their families. Immigrants’ children were recruited into child labour with little or no pay. The immigrants’ working conditions were so poor that they ended up dying or contracting diseases. They lived below the poverty life and hard the worst living conditions in the United States. Children in the early twentieth century were contributors to family incomes as their parents were in most cases unwell due to the poor working conditions.
Immigrant children who got the opportunity to study attended public schools and were discriminated in their schools. Immigrants have been mocked and accused of depleting the United States government resources. Some immigration systems emphasise more on deportation instead of helping and legalising immigrants. Many immigrant women in America have become single mothers because deportation mostly has impacts on men. Several women have been left behind with heavy burdens in their families. Deportation hurts families and leaves them desperate. Single mothers become overburdened when their husbands are detained or deported. They then resort to doing odd jobs to make ends meet. Such parents become too busy to get involved in their children’s lives. Kids from dysfunctional families usually become delinquents due to the absence of a father figure.
Immigration destabilised most families. Women’s role transitioned to taking care and providing for their families. They were hard working and made sure the children did not lack their basic needs. Men, on the other hand, were fond of finding a good resting place where they can hang around as they waited for their wives to provide. Immigrants’ habitats were congested leading to poor social lives. Many resorted to criminal activities with the hope of earning sources of livelihoods. Moral decay became rampant with increased cases of sexual violations. Diseases such as tuberculosis were quick to spread, Infant mortality rate as well increased and children were dying every year because of the inadequate health facilities. Throughout the centuries, the immigrants have always lived in fear of being victimised by the police force. They were accused of participating in criminal activities on the basis that one was an immigrant. Immigrants' homes were unlawfully searched without any warrant. They were considered as slaves and consistently harassed by the police.
Conclusion
Conclusively, immigrants in America must be treated equally. They improve America’s economy due to their high population. A growing population means an increase in labour force and more revenue. The immigrants are hardworking individuals seeking for better lives. They are human beings who deserve kind treatments. The government must work more on legalising the undocumented immigrants in America rather than solely concentrating on their deportations.
