My expected audience would be parents who are looking into a new vaccine for their children, but are uncertain as to which of the recent discoveries are safe and effective.
Individual doctors, Molecular biologists from all over the world, as well as students of biotechnology, may also be interested in sharing the information from the topic I will talk about through further research.
I decided to explain the topic I have chosen through a brochure. It would be easier for the parents to go through a brochure because all the important points are already highlighted and will save them much time. I plan to compare as well as contrast edible vaccines from current vaccines. Also, I have decided to include a brief history of how edible vaccine was invented. This way, the readers will clearly see the pros and cons of this potential advancement in the field of medicine.
Edible Vaccine - A Promising Future for Developing Countries
The Situation:
There are two million unnecessary deaths each year due to diseases that could have been avoided if only the people who had these ailments were able to get the right vaccination on time. Edible vaccine with its heat-resistant ability, relatively cheaper cost and absence of syringe shots, might just be the cure to this increasing mortality rate.
The Problem with Current Vaccines:
- Syringe Shots
Most children are scared of syringe shots, causing them to refuse to get the vaccine, the parents dragging the child to the doctor, and the doctor having a hard time in convincing the child that the syringe shot is just like an ant bite. Every parent goes through this process many times for each child because there are several kinds of necessary vaccines.
- Sensitivity to Temperature Changes
- Shelf Life
Even at regulated temperature, current vaccines do not last very long. That is why it is very hard for doctors from third-world countries to import needed vaccines. Also, once a vial of vaccine is opened, the vaccine in it must be consumed immediately otherwise the remaining liquid will be useless.
- High Cost
Current vaccines are often expensive because of the raw materials that are being used for it as well as the process to which it is made. Most patients, especially those from the rural areas cannot afford such costly medicine.
New Discovery, New Hope:
What’s the Difference?
- Cheaper
Unlike current vaccines, edible vaccine would be much cheaper because the crops that will be used are those that are abundant in the environment and also can easily be grown or cultivated. In edible vaccines, budget for the materials of the vials and syringe can be cut, thus making edible vaccines less expensive.
- More Resistant to Heat
Edible vaccines answer the problem of refrigeration that is present in current vaccines. Current vaccines need to be maintained in a certain temperature. However, in edible vaccine, there is no need to refrigerate certain agricultural crops.
- Longer Shelf Life
Fruits and vegetables last longer when proper care is observed, solving the problem of shelf life.
- No More Syringe Shots
Another thing that makes edible vaccines more favorable is because patients would not have to endure shots, making children less afraid to be immunized and reducing the stress of the parents.
Disclaimer:
Edible vaccines are still not commercially available because they are still being studied thoroughly. However, once it is out in the market, it will be a great help to patients to all over the world.
