While there has been considerable progress in terms of gender equality, a lot is still lacking in terms of how women and men are perceived. Women are still supposed to be lesser gender, at least the way it seems. The patriarchal nature of the old American society has not been kicked out completely. Instead, capitalism has married with the old system. Capitalism has therefore been an engine that promotes distinctive gender roles, pays women less wages, uses women as sexual objects to make more money, and makes it hard for women to acquire position of power. Men are therefore the biggest beneficiaries of the capitalist economic system. In the list of top a hundred richest Americans, women are only making less than 10%. How does this relate to our class’ discussion on gender paradigms?
Well, the biggest things affecting girls today all relate to the society that socializes men and women differently. While boys are socialized to own the world, conquer, express manhood, acquire more wealth and win, women are socialized to be strong but not too strong, sexy but not slutty, intelligent but not smarter than their men, educated but not paid well. In a nutshell, the society is so rigid on the girl child. Women are still expected to be the ideal mother of the children and wife.
Weight is also another societal burden on the girl. The media has defined an ideal beautiful woman. The ideal woman should tall, weigh a certain weight, dress a certain way, has a defined color of the hair and speak in a certain way, women who naturally bigger or slender are discriminated upon. It for this reason that many young girls are forced to go extra mile to meet these rigid requirement set upon them by the society. Girls exercise, eat less; use certain lotions, all in the hope of being accepted by the mainstream society. What happens to women that do fit these criteria?
Hyper sexualization is yet another problem that comes with the society. Women are hyper sexualized in the media. Music videos are full of images that are sexually suggestive, adverts are all with “sexy” models, and clothes are designed specifically meant to create the image of sexiness. The dilemma for most girls is what is exactly decent or sexy. I think that many girls are confused on how to distinguish between sexy and decent.
In general, I am hoping that education will change the society. If more women and men are educated, hopefully there will be a change in attitude. People will stop buying products that encourage gender segregation and stereotyping. Education will help society reach that benchmark that is even for both men and women.
