Marxism is a tool to describe relations between social classes in conditions of capitalism rules. Considering discussed material and presentation, we can see that production is targeted not to satisfy client but to create profit for people who are selling goods. This strategy is aimed for exploitation of human labor and leads to wasting of resources.
Nowadays perspectives described by Marks are as well useful. Society lives in vicious circle because they work, creating products which are not always necessary. They are receiving money for their job and after they are buying these goods which they do not need. Economic systems are claiming existing of free markets, however mostly people are not free to choose because market, together with capitalists and opinion leaders have already developed need for their product. Values are constructed by necessity of material goods which could be obtained through hard labor. All this is making system works because people keep it alive, while working on bunch of people who are in wealthier social group. Our economic decisions are defined by our limits of budget which is formed according to our labor. This is why people who are willing to owe more are taking credits or borrowing money. Until some limits it is working but after that problems are getting bigger and then system collapses, defaults are occurring; people are losing their jobs and houses. Nevertheless after some time people are building the same system again.
On the other hand, I believe that sooner or later world’s trend of consumerism will be replaced and these tight strings between capitalist economy and society will disappear.
What difference does it make if we define the problem of alcoholism as a personal problem or as a social problem? Of what value is a sociological analysis of alcoholism?
Alcoholism is a problematic state of person which can be observed and interpreted from different perspectives. Labeling it as private or social issue is different because of further interpretations of this problem. Private situations are usually more hidden and not revealed to public. This is why, for example, regarding alcoholism as personal problem means hiding it from the society and in meanwhile ignoring it. Of course, reasons of becoming alcoholic could be considered as private, because they depend on person’s experience and life situations. However, this positioning is closing people with similar problems and leaving them to struggle alone.
On the other side, while considering alcoholism as social problem, it enlarges problematic and brings it on another level of importance. For example, when it becomes a social issue, we speak about it more openly, try to organize different activities for helping alcoholics: discussion clubs, psychological treatments, medical institutions, etc. Bringing alcoholism out of person’s private space means that not only person is responsible or guilty in this problem, but all society around. This helps to solve problem quicker and together, with certain support.
Sociological analysis of alcoholism can be useful to understand reasons of developing, characteristics of person suffering, ways of possible help. Moreover, by discovering problems which are leading to this condition, not only person can be saved, but as well others could be prevented. Such analysis could be useful for other different issues which we are usually considering to be private, whereas it is an actual social problem.
