We all know that the information in our today’s world is critical, information flows around us, and a man is faced with the choice of what kind of information to bring to a head. Nowadays, young people just burn the most valuable time of their life on completely useless things. They starve for pleasure and entertainment. It is the scourge of modern society. I think that people were much more intelligent and educated as there were no TV and computer games, and they read the book. Everybody relies on the technologies, new gadgets and forget about the importance of reading. No matter how fast the word develops but reading will always remain relevant and well-read people will be greatly appreciated. Although, it is not the main reason begin reading literature.
First of all, reading increases person’s vocabulary. It gives an opportunity to express one’s opinion, to show your knowledge and education. Today 80% of people have problems with the idea of the right communication, since few people read books. While reading you learn new words, which can be replaced by other phrases that do not sound so nice or proper in some situation. You will learn how to socialize better, more confident and eloquent, it will make a great impression on the successful and intelligent people. Those who do not read books often use in a conversation obscene lecture, because they do not know how to replace them with other more adequate words in order to express their feelings, desires, emotions. Obscene language – is a sign of weakness and ignorance of a man who does not read books, or does it very rare. Besides, reading can help to improve person’s writing skills
Secondly, reading develops person’s imagination, memory, logical thinking. When you read a book, you imagine yourself in your subconscious mind, all the situations, characters that develop your imagination. Also, while reading smart books you develop logic, since you are searching for and picking out accurate information that will lead you to a particular purpose. A man, who regularly reads books, at least 1 hour a day, improves his memory, as every day he remembers something new, some kind of useful information. Those people who live every day in the same informational field do not develop their memory and cannot remember more facts. Maryanne Wolf in her book Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain, explains that: "Typically, when you read, you have more time to think. Reading gives you a unique pause button for comprehension and insight. By and large, with oral language – when you watch a film or listen to a tape – you don’t press pause." (Wolf, 2008)
It is worth mentioning that reading books help greatly while learning foreign languages. It is a wonderful opportunity to broaden your vocabulary, grammar. Reading out loud helps to develop pronunciation. When you read a book aloud, works your visual memory. And when you read a book aloud and with your eyes, it is the best way to remember what you read, and will develop your diction, tempo and sound.
Moreover, reading is a great source of inspiration. A lot of musicians, filmmakers, scriptwriters, actors, painters draw their inspiration from books. They write songs (Guns’n’Roses The Catcher in the Rye), paint pictures (Joseph Wright of Derby Romeo and Juliet: the Tomb Scene), screen films (The Great Gatsby, Anna Karenina). Thus, reading stimulates your creativity.
It is a well-known fact that reading is considered to be a good way to relax, decompress and de-stress. Looking at a computer screen, constant noise, movement, flashing lights from the TV are very stressful for our brains. Reading can calm the min and relax the body. Even just reading for a short amount of time can reduce stress levels by up to 68%. (Cohen, 2014) Besides, reading may help you sleep better. Reading a book before going to bed calms the brain and cues the body up for shut-eye. Also, it helps to escape from reality and routine in an imaginary world where your problems will not get you. Some scientists believe that reading may ease a depression.
When going to work, school or university by bus or by subway, when traveling by train or by plane we may notice a lot of reading people. That is why one more advantage of reading is a good way to kill time.
Books teach people how to live. Reading books allows you to find the answers to many questions, because everything on this planet is already known. Thousands of people have lived their lives and shared their experiences with all of humanity. In a book you can find a solution to any problem, whether it's a lack of money or relationships with other people. It would be foolish not to use it. When you take a book in your hands, you become its main character. It allows escaping from reality and routine problems which, unfortunately, happen to all of us. Also, a person can find the perfect image of himself in the form of any character or a real person, and subsequently embody that image in his real life.
Think a hundred times before you take any decision. What is better: to give in to the positive influence of ideas from books of great men or waste your time on completely useless, though pleasurable things such as computer games.
Love for a good book, the habit of reading is to be educated from childhood. And it is a task of parents to instill a love of reading, let the child into the magical world of literature. According to Victor Hugo – a French novelist and poet – to learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark. Nowadays, young people prefer to watch a movie instead of reading a book. But even a very good film cannot to substitute a book. The film can help to perceive the book more emotionally, mentally, but not replace it.
