Hi Ronnie, I believe that the art of sincere gratitude never grows weary. Meaningful and ongoing recognition and rewards provide a low cost and effective technique of encouraging better performances and raising the morale of the workers. From the way you felt after being classified as a top performer, it is vivid that the recognition encouraged you to put your mind and effort into other tasks to obtain more acknowledgment. Employee recognition entails informal, formal, and timely acknowledgments of a team or person’s achievements that go beyond the normal performances. The aspect of praising others serves as the psychology of business since the manager taps into the emotional and psychological well-being of the workers to encourage them, develop suitable working relationships, and provide the employees with a better view of themselves. The psychology empowers the personnel to go that extra mile to attain goals and give excellent services (Manzoor, 2012).
However, human nature has a tendency to make people anticipate monetary or material rewards for good performances. In such a situation, the management may be forced to invest a lot of funds towards providing bonuses or remuneration packages for the employees. The practice may not be difficult for the top notch organizations such as Apple and Microsoft that award their top employees with bonuses. Unfortunately, not every firm may have adequate resources to direct towards material recognition. Hence, they should focus on giving a little bit of each, that is, psychological and material rewards. The essence of recognition is depicted by the Maslow needs hierarchy under self-actualization and esteem requirements. Acknowledgments make employees feel respected boosting their confidence to continue going out of their way to accomplishing the firm’s directives. Also, recognition asserts the ideology that the individual has the capability of becoming whatever he or she wants (Carpenter, Bauer, and Erdogan. 2010).
