The Americans usually divide the US history into a several main periods: the American Revolution and John Trumbull's Declaration of Independence, the era of slaves and plantations, Civil War, Reconstruction, the American Century and the modern days. Basically, we do not get back to the history of our country after we finish the high school and we know it at approximately the same level as we know Greek myths. Yet, it is a quite significant issue of the modern society as how can we bring the knowledge of the American history to the future generations if we do not know it at all.
In this respect, it is necessary to understand how the “traditional” history we learn at school differ from the real one. The “traditional” history sure thing makes us proud of being citizens of the United States. And yes, we have to be proud of that. However, there are things where we were and are guilty. For instance, the treatment of the indigenous peoples of America. Indian tribes experienced a genocide from the side of British colonists who then became the American population. They were removed from their original lands and only years after the US government allocated these Indian tribes into a specific area on the north of the country.
Indeed, we have to proud of being Americans. We have to proud of the oldest valid Constitution in the world. We have to proud of being the first who brought democracy into the world society and started to fight against slavery and racism. Indeed, we have to proud of being the citizen of the most powerful country in the world. But we need to remember all our mistakes as well in order to avoid them any time in the future and become better.
