According to the book, American exceptionalism is a distinct view of America, on the quality of its government, political and social structures and ideas. The concept makes America a special nation among others that are equally developed. In addition, the concept has put absolved America of being able to connote to the evils as similar in other societies, which has led to a lot of debate. The writer notes how values of liberty, individualism and laissez-faire have the basis for America to be named as an exceptional nation.
Bromund perceives USA as a superior nation because he says it is the richest country that is founded on a system of capitalism that embraces democracy. In addition, it achieved its independence through a rebellious resolution, which makes it more superior from the others. Thereafter, it formed a government that accepted the God-given rights of the people. It was the first nation to embrace the opinions of the people, through a constitution that was debated and agreed upon. He further calls America unusual because of its foundations on matters of free speech and has rights afforded to criminals, who are otherwise a nuisance to the society. He gives a good example of the nobleness of President Barack Obama as a representation of his citizens. Apparently, when he was asked about his thoughts on America being exceptional, he said that every person thinks their nation is exceptional. It, therefore, makes it a personal opinion. According to Koh, the concept of exceptionalism in America is bad. He says that the four theories are the most destructive of the American system, and should not be laid on the basis of it being a unique country. He points out that the USA has awarded itself exclusionary laws, which make them unique, but cause more problems not only in the country, but in the world as well. To this extent, it can be fully afforded to be different, though in a negative way. He states that exceptionalism should be portrayed in meaningful things such as leadership and integrity.
I agree that the USA is an exceptional nation. It is the best example of a nation that embraces distinct rights culture. In the country, there have been many efforts to eradicate aspects of racism. The fight against racist, discriminatory acts are so severe those previously named minorities are becoming the majority races. The constitution has put up measures to ensure everyone gets their deserved share of the profits of the economy. According to what is discussed in distinctive rights, aspects of speech and religion have been afforded in the rights of the people. It is true that other constitutions have the same, but enforcement of such laws is what makes America unique. About the creation of different labels, Koh argues that it is a big problem for America to undermine the laws of other nations and appreciate then when needed. I would say that it is a way through which the country can still maintain its sovereignty. Being exceptional is characterized by doing something different. The writer says not following laws is part of their negative exceptionalism. The country ratifies and amends the laws to what benefits itself, which is all part of being exceptional. Absolving itself of international obligations is not bad. The United States is only protecting itself from those laws that will cause future problems. The ratification or otherwise of laws does not mean the laws are applicable to everybody. There has to be the existence of structures to support these laws.
In addition, the economic, social and political dominance of the country comes with a certain cost. Self-centeredness is often the cost. If the United States feels threatened by the international rules of law, there is no reason not to absolve itself. However, the righter sights this as double standards. He suggests that they should employ such aspects of being unique in fostering integrity to the international rule of law. The protection the United States gives its citizens made it exceptional.
