Abstract
The concept of education has been described in many different ways to suit the requirements of an array of experts in different fields. Romero et al. (2009) proposed the Barrios pedagogy that covers the aspect of education that promotes social equality through the rational behavior of the participants in the education system. Freire (2000) claims that education is significant regarding building people's characters to structure society. Martin defines the concept of education regarding the description of an educated man. This paper covers the agreement of the three sources of the concept of education. All of them view education as a process of acquiring knowledge. Lastly, the common definition and interpretation of education according to the sources is that it is a politically controlled system. The authors agree that education somehow fails to meet the needs of the society.
Introduction
Purpose of Education According to the Sources
According to Romero et al. (2009), the purpose of education is to bring social fairness and transformation through decisive empathetic intellectualism. Education serves to bring awareness and promote an accepting culture of others’ racial, ethnic, and social backgrounds. The elements of critically compassionate intellectualism as described by Romero et al. include conversion of people at the academic and personal levels, organic rationalism, centering the both the individual and group agencies, and students being the creators of knowledge. Others include authentic caring that results in a nurtured, and a blossomed sense of intellectualism and the pedagogy de Los Barrios (Romero et al., 2009). The Barrios pedagogy focuses on the aspect of education that promotes social equality through the rational behavior of the participants in the education system and a level of caring for others that are not influenced by personal feelings and attitudes of being different.
Freire (2000) suggests that education is significant concerning building people's characters to structure society. Education has a role in humanization according to Freire; he proposes that it is people's occupation to cause humanization, and this occupation is education (Freire 2000). Education has depicted a system that is influenced by political power, and educational projects are the only relief for the oppressed. He presents education as a mere narration of facts, which involves a boring process of narration. The students simply memorize the information availed to them without considering what it all means and reality is reduced to a list of facts and figures. Education is an act of depositing this information into the depositories-the students (Freire, 2000). Freire’s definition of education is focused on the forms of education processes in place. He argues that education should not simply be the recital of facts and figures but should trigger the minds of the learners to question and appreciate what they are being taught.
Martin Jane Martin explains the concept of education concerns the description of an educated man. She asserts “to be a truly educated person and the kind of education he assumes one must have to acquire those traits would., with minor variations be cited by any number of people today(Martin 1982).” It is a reference made to another author's work and is used as a contrast to Martin's understanding of the concept of education. The education process is referred to as the process of rearing; “family of processes which have as their outcome the development of an educated person” The disciplines that define an educated person seem not to include the works of women (Martin, 1982). According to Martin, Peter’s ideal gives women a lower chance to be an “educated person” that does men and thus excludes women from this realm "Education as we conceive it is an intentional activity”. Education is then defined as an array of processes that make an educated person. From Martin's book, there is a bias against the definition of education for women and their benefits of education come at a loss.
The Agreement of the Sources on the Concept of Education
General Definition and Interpretation
The common definition and interpretation of education according to the sources is that it is a politically controlled system which is rigid and fails to incorporate some members of society such as racial minorities and women. All the three sources seem to point out a problem with the ‘how' of education in that; the concept of education as described by the three authors seemingly fails to meet the needs of society. Whether it is because of discrimination against women, or racial minorities as presented by two of the sources, current education seems to be insufficient in dealing with rising issues. Since mainstream educational systems are controlled and changed by political institutions, there is a need for educational projects to fill the void that excludes others from being completely accepted as members of an educational facility.
Conclusion
In summary, focuses on the process of gaining knowledge about different aspects of life that result in a person being regarded as an educated person. ‘The concept of education has been used as a way to exclude certain members of society indirectly.' This essay asserts that from racial minorities to women, the concept of education, with reference to the mainstream education system, does not allow for the differences. There is need for education projects to be put in place to ensure every member of the society has access to good quality education.
