My First Kiss
Everyone dreams of their first kiss and what it would be like, often practicing in the mirror or on our hand, longing for someone else’s sweet lips to touch our own and wonder what it would feel like when it happened. When I was 14, my parents sent me to my grandmother’s home on vacation. I remember, it was a hot summer. It was so hot that you could feel the sweat drip down your body and there was no means of air circulating. However, I felt the boredom kick in day after day and desperately wanted something interesting to me.
It seemed that most of the time what I did that summer was that I just watched TV, lying on the bed and waited, wondering when something exciting would happen to me. The only one who brought joy to my gray holiday at my grandmother’s was a neighbor, Zhao. He was one of my best friends.
I was familiar with Zhao after knowing him for two years. In fact, we knew everything about each other. I shared my most intimate thoughts and feelings with him. That summer, as usual, we spent it together. Sometimes he stayed the night with me, but it was completely platonic. I did not think of him as a boyfriend but just a boy who was a friend. He knew that I treated him as a friend, but I saw that he liked me.
My grandmother, Liang, also saw this feeling and said she had for a long time. In her mind, we were already married and she could imagine us with a future together. She had even dreamed up the names of future children that Zhao and I would have together, with a little boy named is Xiao, or if we had a girl, her name was Liang. However, I was firm in my position of the friendship. I simply could not foresee that for myself to have any other kind of relationship with Zhao except as good friends.
Then something odd happened but it did not happen all at once. It was the interesting thing I had been waiting for all summer long and though I was just a mere teenager, I still remember it like it was yesterday. It all began with one of nature’s circumstances: an upcoming shower of stars. I had seen on television that there was to be a meteor shower on the night of July 25. I had decided that I must see it with my own eyes. I wanted to experience it with my best friend so I invited Zhao to join my event. We thought it through in advance and planned out how and where we would go stargazing to witness this phenomenal event.
On the evening of the 24th, Zhao came over to visit me, and we began the final preparations. We collected a huge bag, gathering up all necessary things we thought we needed to watch the meteor shower. We were ready for our big adventure and finally, when the night of July 25 came, we went to the park that was not so far away the house.
On the way to the spot that we had picked out to watch the meteor showers, he talked a lot. Zhao told me about some comics that were so boring to me. However, I did not interrupt him out of politeness for my friend’s interest. I only pretended that I was intrigued and listened to him attentively. At the same time, I felt a strange nervous trembling like I had never experienced before. I looked at Zhao and saw that we were close to each other. I just brushed it off as excitement for the meteor shower.
While he was rambling about comics, we finally reached the park and it was getting dark. Other people had come to look at the stars, too. Zhao took one plaid. However, I realized that we both must huddle on what was a very narrow plaid. I had never felt uncomfortable in such moments, but all of a sudden I noticed that I was overcome by a strange shyness. Zhao seemed to have the same feelings. Somehow, despite this awkward feeling, I calmed down, and we began to wait for the fall of the first star.
We sat in silence for what seemed like ages, but it was 20 minutes. The wind blew on my hands and I shuddered with a chill and Zhao gave me a blanket. For some reason, I noticed a sense of coziness and I offered for him to cover up with it too. We were close to each other, and I put an arm around his shoulder, hugging my best friend as we shared the blanket, awaiting nature’s show in the sky. Suddenly, in the sky, we saw the pale yellow light. A star! I began to look carefully into the deep darkness of the sky and saw other lights. Stars were falling one by one, and we were as happy as five-year-old children, exclaiming with glee with each fall of another star.
At the one moment, I looked at Zhao, and I do not know why, but I kissed him. Our lips were dry from the wind blowing at them, but our lips started to touch. Though it was very brief, the one little kiss that I had leaned in for then turned into a passionate kissing session, as we shared a pretty romantic moment there underneath the showers of the stars. During this process, the night's silence was diluted by the unpleasant smacking sounds. Sometimes, Zhao inadvertently bit the inside part of my lips. Apparently, it was new to him also. I was a little uncomfortable with the fact that I constantly felt his tongue against my mouth, teeth and my own tongue. However, I believed that it was typical kissing. I just assumed it was normal since I was inexperienced.
After our first kiss, Zhao embraced my shoulder, wrapping his arm around me tightly. I began to think about what had just happened. Not to say that it was the best moment in my life, but it seemed to be a normal kiss for the first time. My summer had become interesting and finally, it was nighttime in the middle of the summer with Zhao and stars. At that time, there was no other place I would have wanted to be.
