Conceptual frameworks have been considered to be essential learning tools in the current education systems. As such, it is of importance to have a clear understanding of how conceptual frameworks work in order to ensure its effectiveness and efficiency. A conceptual framework is seen to play a big role in student’s performance or rather their learning. Different scholars have had different views in regards to conceptual framework and this paper would look at their views in order to come up with a clear understanding of what really is meant by the term conceptual framework and how it plays part in learning.
Smyth is one of a renowned scholar and in his case he tries to illustrate on how a conceptual framework is of great use to student researchers who have struggles with the complexity and rigorousness of doctoral study. According to him, conceptual framework develops from rational thinking in regards to key concepts (Berman & Smyth, 2015). Smyth puts forward that a conceptual framework would be credible if it satisfies the following;
Provide a common language to reflect on what is looked upon and to provide reports on it.
Develop guiding principles through which judgement and predictions can be made.
Act as a reference point to locate the research questions.
Provide a structure under which the content of the research would be organised.
On the other hand, Berman’s conceptual framework for assessment of learning is illustrated based on mathematical learning. Her conceptual framework was seen to;
Support definition of the research problem.
Establish theoretical coherence.
Support practical aspects of the study.
Frame the conceptual and practical conclusions.
