Usually, I do not go out on Sunday too much. But it was the very first day of summer, and as long as you are young (or feel that way) this day remains special and symbolical, to a certain degree. So, I called a couple of friends, and one of them proposed to go “Johnny Brenda’s,” a place located in Fishtown section of Philadelphia, on 1201 N. Frankford Ave. I checked what they had in store for today on the Internet. The poster read: “Stolen Memories, your soundtrack provided by DJ Greg Mungan.” The simplistic poster also promised diverse music, free admission and a short run – from 9 PM to 1 AM – just enough for a summer night out before Monday.
“Johnny Brenda’s” was located right on the corner of the street. Fortunately, it exceeded all my expectations: it looked old-fashioned, like a restaurant or club from the first half of 20th century. Essentially, the place looked somewhat elegant, but the atmosphere was very friendly, partly thanks to a pool table and long bar counter; the latter reminded me of a bar from Stanley Kubrick’s “Shining.” All the guest musicians were playing on a theatre-like scene in one of two spacious rooms. DJ Greg Mungan started playing roughly at 9 PM, and it was him who made that evening. He had a lot of different upbeat tracks in store from an array of genres – Funk, Hip-hop, R&B, Electronic and more – that fitted the summer mood perfectly. Moreover, he managed to mix them all perfectly; transitions between the tracks were almost unnoticeable as though they flowed one into another. The DJ started off with fresh tracks, among them “Fever” by Black Keys, Chromeo’s “Over Your Shoulder,” and few Broken Bells’ funky tunes. After midnight, when he had already established a connection with the audience, Mungan put on a few classics, making the audience sing along. I and all of my friends who came along really enjoyed that evening, especially in terms of music. It is great when a DJ has such a diversified taste in music and you can feel he is having a great time together with the audience.
