I enjoyed my visit of Hollywood Costume Exhibition. Hollywood Costume Exhibition is a showroom that was created by Deborah Nadoolman Landis in a way to display legendary costumes that have been used in many film works. The exhibition display over 150 costumes and most of them comes from the iconic movie characters, such as Charlie Chaplin’s from The Tramp, Henry Cavill from Superman, All about Eve, Vertigo and Rear Window Avatar. Most of these costumes were paired with heroic quotes, reviews and interviews with the designers. Looking at these costumes, they recalled the memory of movies in my mind.
Movie is a mirror of society. We are living in a dynamic society which is a subject to transformation day in day out. Due to these gradual transformations, a lot of changes have been evidenced in the film industry, ranging from adoption of new genres of movies to new technologies and film costumes. For instance, modern clothes are considered a success if they overwhelmingly fascinated the audience. On the other hand, some films have incorporated use of totally invisible costumes as a way of capturing the audience’s attention. In other words, we will be able to tell the age of the movies by looking at its costume composition.
According to Fiske, "Popular culture is made by the people, not produced by the culture industry." In addition, he believes that since films must attract the largest possible group of audience, the film industry and other stakeholders must not limit their works to the ideology, but come up with costumes and ideas that are culturally adhering. Williams, on the other hand, believes that culture is ordinary; a tool that has been used over decades to unite people in the appreciation of their everyday lives and that everyone can access and produce culture.
In conclusion, the ideas of most films are the real-time happenings of the world and therefore for them to be effectively communicated, they must be done in the most current way, probably through adoption of the most current costumes. In challenging the normal audience’s expectation, the film industries have deviated from the more common production patterns and mode of dressing for the actors.
