Dates are known to be the most known fruits that can survive in several regions. Date palms do well on irrigated oases and on fertile plains that get water from mountains. More often than not, they are found in Saudi Arabia, and they are believed to be of paramount importance to a variety of traditions and religions. Besides, dates enjoy the most attention compared to other fruits worldwide (Habib, Hosam, and Ibrahim 544). Date palm is mentioned twenty-three times in the Quran, and they are also quite famous to the Muslims. For instance, during Ramadan, all Muslims often eat dates on sunset, and they consider it a sign of wealth. Aside from being crucial to traditions and religions, dates and palm are also beneficial to the environment and the human body.
In as much as they are amazingly delicious, dates have several health benefits (Habib, Hosam, and Ibrahim 545). They contain essential nutrients that are crucial for the proper growth of children and are also easily digestible. They have vitamins, minerals and iron as well as simple sugars like dextrose and fructose that re-energize the body. Furthermore, they are a good source of potassium that aids in controlling the heart rate hence reduces one’s chance of getting the coronary diseases. Besides, they also contain calcium, magnesium, copper and manganese, minerals that are very crucial to the human body.
In addition, the intake of dates is also associated with a healthy pregnancy term and delivery. Habib, Hosam, and Ibrahim posit that several pieces of research show that dates contain specific stimulants that are beneficial for breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women (547). The stimulants strengthen the womb muscles making it easier for pregnant women to go through delivery. Also, its sugar contents give nursing mothers enough energy to nurse their children. It is believed that dates consumption most especially within the last four weeks to delivery significantly reduces the cases of induction and labor augmentation but rather brings about a more favorable delivery outcome.
Also, dates promote the digestive health and relieve constipation (Habib, Hosam, and Ibrahim 548). It contains both soluble and insoluble fiber that makes regular bowel movements hence promote colon health. The fiber is crucial in the human body because it aids in the cleaning of the gastrointestinal system thus enhancing the colon to greater efficacy levels. This action essentially reduces colon cancer and the risks of colitis. Furthermore, dates are also used in several remedies for hemorrhoids. Above all, dates are known to boost the brain health. It also contains Vitamin B6, a very crucial element associated with enhanced brain performance resulting in better test scores.
In conclusion, dates and palm have countless benefits and have taken a powerful place in the lives of many and its cultivation has been the most common form of farming. Dates used to be, and still are very popular foods in Saudi Arabia and are also a symbol of hospitality. Also, they are the first to be consumed by Muslims when breaking the fast in Ramadan. Therefore, apart from being among the sweetest fruits ever, it also comes in different varieties. It can be taken when fresh or dried. But whichever way, its health benefits are still the same. Dates and palm have been and will remain beneficial to the human race due to its countless benefits and thus should be greatly valued and its farming should be practiced by many.
