Until the 18th century death was not the harshest method of punishment in civilized counties. Tortures were common at that time as a measure of punishing the guilty. Nowadays, death penalty is still used as a punishment in many countries. This topic causes great controversy. Is death a sufficient punishment for a crime? To answer this question, a few aspects should be regarded.
Firstly, after the person is sentenced to death, waiting for execution can be extremely painful from the psychological point of view. Living in the present with an understanding that there is no future can be a torture itself. In the US, unlike other countries, in some states these delays are permitted or even insisted on. In 1982 there were about one thousand convicts on a death row in the US. Secondly, death should be inflicted as painlessly as possible. The methods of death penalty should be devoid from cruelty. Unnecessary cruelty should be avoided. Thirdly, most people condemned to death fear it. Less than 1% of all the convicted resign themselves to death and do not want to appeal against the court decision. These convicts either think that they really do not deserve life, or they prefer it to living in prison. Some opponents of death penalty are of the opinion that convicts resigned for execution may have committed the crimes for the sake of being executed, using law as means of committing suicide. However, these arguments are not proven. Finally, one is not as afraid of death as of dying, believing this is a painful process. All people’s lives end with death, and death sentence is shortening the life. Execution can be the less painful way of dying from all. It has to be considered if death penalty can be justified.
