Analysis Paper
Introduction
The purpose of this analysis paper is to demonstrate a connection or association between the theoretical concepts learnt in class with a particular communication case. The case under analysis is an article published on Yahoo News entitled, “Czech leader says Muslim integration ‘practically impossible in Europe”. The concept or theory used to analyze the case is the ‘Hypodermic Needle Theory’ of the Mass Communication module.
In the article published on Yahoo News on January 17, 2016, the President of Czech Republic has mentioned that it is ‘practically impossible’ for the Muslims community to integrate into the European culture. Citing a few examples of the ghettos and excluded neighborhoods in the Western European countries, the leader came up with these blazing anti-migrant expressions. Not only did the President termed the integration impossible, he also sarcastically referred to the Cologne incident (on the New Year’s Eve, when dozens of women were sexually assaulted) saying that if Muslims will bring their culture in our society then it might end up like the same situation (Yahoo News, 2016).
Further clarifying his statement, he mentioned that cultures with same values can be integrated with one another and not the ones who have different believes and norms. Referring to the example of the Vietnamese and Ukrainian communities, he added that these communities were able to integrate in the Czech society because of their somewhat similar values.
The Czech President also reflected his anger stating that the entire influx is controlled and is being done to gradually control Europe. To note, this is not the first time that the leader has mentioned his thoughts against the refugees arriving in Europe. Also, last year he urged young men from the war torn countries like Syria and Iraq to take up arms and fight against the Islamic State (IS) rather than avoiding the problems and running away. He repeatedly had spoken against the arrival of refugees and migrants in Europe. Also, he targeted the Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood as they want to take control over Europe.
However, the positive point is that the Czech government is accepting the refugees under EU quota scheme (Yahoo News, 2016). The given case mentions Pope Francis example as they welcomed more than 5000 migrants and encourage them to treasure their culture and values. In addition, the case also have some favorable examples for migrants and it is the reason that they suggested to celebrate “world day of migrants” in which, migrants can remind their actual culture and values yet accepts to live a new life. Pope Francis believes that by doing so European governments will keep welcoming migrants (Yahoo News, 2016).
It should be noted that the pontiff encouraged Vatican ambassadors to keep acknowledging security and other concerns. It is because the recent mass influx of people from the Middle East, South Asia and Africa became a reason for many cultural and social issues in European countries (Yahoo News, 2016).
Interpretation
Assessing the case, it can be noted that the message being conveyed by the president of Czech Republic overlooks the common grounds of Muslim. The cultural discrimination outlines the difference and separation of Muslims living in Czech Republic. The message being conveyed only focuses on the thinking on western society supporting the new laws to control the reflux of Muslim immigrants in Europe. The views shared in the news only support the opinion of a biased mindset that develops barriers and differences on the basis of norms and values.
The influx of Muslim refugee and immigrants in the country are associated with the security dilemma increasing within the country. The president shares his opinion that the way to control security measures within European countries is through implementing anti-migrant regulations. However, it completely reflects the opinion that supports the migrants because of the economic progress and strengthening business. It triggers the opinion for a particular sect that is expressing anti-migrant views within European countries (Foss & Littlejohn, 2007).
The message shares on the assumption of the President and certain people who are supporting anti-migrant movements stimulating individuals. The message shares provoke and one-sided opinion which contradicts with the opinions of people supporting migrants (Berger, 2012). The Iraq and Syrian War is associated with the increasing dilemma of security and control within the European countries.
Evaluation
While evaluating the entire case it can be said that the President of Czech Republic Milos Zeman used media to communicate his views about Muslim integration that is according to him practically impossible in Europe (Yahoo News, 2016). He presented some example that the cultural integration is not possible as there are many differences among Muslim culture and European culture. In addition, these differences can involve Muslim refugees to further issues with Europeans.
It should be noted that his statement has left many questions for the Muslim refugees. Although there are many anti-migrant rhetoric politicians and parties who are against Muslim community into European society but still Czech government has welcomed many migrants. Moreover, there are many asylum seekers under EU quota scheme who are looking opting wealthier countries like Germany and other EU states (Yahoo News, 2016).
The potential outcomes of this televised interview with Milos Zeman may leave negative impact on other welcoming Czech public. Also, the cultural differences are highlighted by the president who urged people to do not accept the people with different culture in the Czech Republic. It can be analyzed that Milos Zeman used Hypodermic Needle Theory to deliver his message so that it can leave strong impact on people (Yahoo News, 2016).
It is the reason that the anti-migrant rhetoric becomes active and they started to protest against refugees. He also urged those who are running away from their countries to fight against IS. By doing so, he is discouraging people to come to Czech or any other EU state. Moreover, it is noted that the President also targets Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood. He believed that Muslims want to take control over Europe. Thus, it can be said that statements like this without any proofs or evidences can start new issues among Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood and Europeans.
The positive point to be noted is that Pope Francis is ready to accept migrants it is a positive step towards the betterment of the refugees. The idea to celebrate “world day of migrants” is a new way to accept let refugees feel respected. It is a way to remember their stories, culture and precious values and forget about all unfortunate incidents, bad experiences of misery, and fear. The potential outcome of such effort can control the cultural discrimination in Europe.
Conclusion
While concluding the entire case it can be said that the Milos Zeman television interview has left negative and strong impact on anti-migrant rhetoric as well as Muslim refugees. It is because his statements are strongly against Muslim integration in Europe and it impacts the acceptance of Muslim refugees in Europe. The cultural discrimination and the information that is communicated by the President to the audiences/masses without considering the opinion of individual can develop new problems in Czech Republic. Moreover, the views shared in the interview only support the opinion of a biased mindset that develops barriers and differences on the basis of norms and values.
It can be analyzed that the case contains some positive examples as well for example Pope Francis and pontiff are the ones who are encouraging the European government to accept the refugees in Europe. The good thing is that they are respecting the culture and values of the refugees it is the reason that they urged people to celebrate world day of migrants. In addition, they have accepted more than 5000 migrants and there is an EU quota scheme to place 160,000 asylum seekers in Europe. It can be noted that the case highlights cultural barriers that are emerging in the western society and that is contradicting with the Muslims residing within Czech Republic. Few positive steps such as acceptance of migrants from Muslim countries can end many upcoming problems.
