I have been associated with the social sector for several years and have been working under my supervisor for about the past four years. During this tenure, I have analysed his leadership style and have witnessed the dominant trait of the need for achievement.
Individuals having the dominant trait of yearning for achievement are those who aspire in bringing about change by resolving complex issues. Especially the social sector poses to be extremely challenging as it involves in surpassing the complex barriers of cultural sensitivity and social norms and values in bringing about a change. Changing the opinions and mind-set of individuals is highly complex and this requires a leadership style displaying the dominant trait to achieve.
The leadership style was based on being participative with subordinates and engaged in empowering and entrusting them with responsibilities so as to achieve both short term and long term goals. He strived in setting realistic and achievable objectives within a given time frame and would ensure that the objectives were met. He is an excellent orator and displayed a charismatic personality. This personality of him helped in motivating and stimulating employees to perform desired objectives and deliver them within given timelines (Delbecq et al. 2013).
The leadership style of achievement is involved in collecting all relevant data and then thoroughly analyzing them prior to taking a decision. Thus, he displayed a leadership behaviour that involved in reasoning and emotional intelligence skills by comparing diverse data prior to taking decisions. This helped him in chalking out clear approaches in order to meet objectives.
He displayed high skills of innovation. He gave subordinates an opportunity to come up with ideas and believed in change so as to achieve objectives and attain targets. This engaged in studying the current situation and then changing the approach in order to achieve desired targets. Especially in the social sector, one needs to work with diverse communities. Depending on the mind-set, values and norms the manner in achieving set goals keep on changing. Displaying a leadership behavior that has the dominant trait of being achievement oriented has helped in achieving set targets within deadlines and this has helped in achieving recognition as well as a number of projects. Hence, leadership behavior of being achievement oriented has helped in positively impacted the employees as well as the organization as a whole (Andersen, 2010).
