The major push and pull factors that led to intra-territorial emigration include the following:
General crime and violence (Fleeing war and/or civil unrest),
An unstable economy which in turn affects an individual’s social and economic opportunities
Career advancement.
Mismatch between an individual’s skill set and suitable occupation.
Jobs and wage information flow
Family unification
The countries were most favored by migrants during the post-emancipation era included:Trinidad, Jamaica, Grenada, St. Vincent, St. Lucia
There are several factors why the immigrants were attracted to these countries. These include:
Warm climate of the Caribbean
Better wages
Availability of land
Better living as shopkeepers or as petty traders
The US had influence in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Haiti and the Commonwealth Caribbean. Most of its influence revolved around the political, economic and social aspects. On the US economic penetration front, it was easy for the US organization to penetrate the market/ financial market for her goods when these countries gained political independence. American popular culture was another influence on these countries where American movies that are being watched in these countries.US also supported the tourism for its general economic, social and cultural benefits. These countries proved to be strategic for the US military operations. Political influence of the US is felt on these countries even to the present day with Puerto Rico being a US territory. Improvement of infrastructure especially in Cuba due to the interest in the sugar production. US had an influence in the elimination of trade barriers and economic situations of these countries including employment opportunities.
