Nursing assessment involves gathering of all the details and necessary information about a patient’s psychological, physiological, spiritual and sociological status. Genogram and ecomap are two tools of Calgary family assessment and intervention model which are helpful as the nursing assessment tools, which the paper is going to discuss one by one.
Calgary Family Assessment Model is a nursing assessment tool that is generally used by the family nurses to know about the three fundamental areas of the family structure, the gender of all family members and their extended family relationships along with other internal and external factors (Wright & Leahey, 2012). It is much more enhanced assessment tool as it offers a developmental categorisation of the family, for example, which stage the family of the patient is (whether child bearing stage or retirement stage etc.) and whether the stage development is normal or not. It also examines the normal functionality of the family within its current stage.
Genogram is a nursing assessment tool for tracking the patient’s internal family history and his/her relationships (Wright & Leahey, 2012). It comprises of a detailed pictorial display of a whole family, even going beyond a family tree, and containing information about genealogy and familial and non-familial relationships. This depicts what is happening in a family across generations. Information gathered through this tool have demographic, functional and critical events.

Ecomap is another nursing assessment tool that helps the nurse know about the patient’s personal and social relationships with his or her external environmental settings (Wright & Leahey, 2012). Ecomap helps in counselling a patient. It is a powerful tool for discovering the underlying causes of depression and anxiety and other mental conditions.
