Feminism is the range of ideologies, social, and political movements that are designed to achieve equal rights for women. The topic that I have selected for the paper is the fat women daily encounter discrimination and hostility in the society. I’ve chosen two related articles one is around six months ago, and other is one year ago.
The other article that I choose is “A Lingerie brands offers real women as (Role) Models” published by The New York Times in Feb 22, 2016. It has reported that women are very concerned about their physical appearance. The fat body has become a feminist issue, and fat women are treated in different negative ways. It is discussed in the article that different companies are selecting smart women in the advertising campaign. The lingerie brands consider smart and beautiful women for their advertisements and promote lean body structure. The companies have focused on reducing the obesity among the women promoted awareness about various eating disorders. In 2014, Aerie adopted the neutral body approach and started the strong, beautiful campaign to promote a positive body image among women. Unilever has started real beauty campaign and selected beautiful women for Dove advertising that attract more customers. Currently, women’s physical appearance is an important issue, and it has caused discrimination. Different companies have started various campaigns to promote awareness about health disorders (Olson par. 2-3-11).
Other selected article is “helping young women challenge body image myths”. Africa News Service, Aug 11, 2015. It is discussed in the article that All Africa Global Media has influence young women to take part groundbreaking program. It is designed to empower young women’s in Africa to raise voice, speak out, built confidence, and challenge their body image. It is noted that the women’s lose their confidence level due to body image, size, and heavy weight. The body image discrimination has increased, and it created different issues in young generation. Africa Global Media has started the program with collaboration of the Dove Self-Esteem project, the World Association of Girls Guides and Girl Scouts, and Nigerian Girls Guides Association. The body image issues have resulted in stress, financial pressure due to job discrimination, isolation, lack of exercises and fitness activities due to harassment, and others in young women. The body confidence crises have increased in young women and the Nigerian Girls Guide Association is taking strong actions to overcome that issue. The young girls lose their potential due to poor body structure and physical appearance of women is an important concern for societies. The organization is working to meet the results .
The lady that I selected in the topic is Eleanor Roosevelt. She was a very strong personality who impressed me. Hence, I choose her. She was a former first lady of the United States. It was difficult to find the source that indicate Eleanor Roosevelt own words and speeches however, some famous leaders have discussed about her in many speeches. Eleanor Roosevelt was an active leader, writer, politician, and wife of the 32nd U.S President (“Eleanor Roosevelt Championed Causes”). She has worked for equal political, social, racial justice. She had a great role in women’s development that she played as the first lady. Eleanor Roosevelt has expressed views about women and told, “A women is like a tea bag you can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water” . She has focused on women's basic rights and increased the role of women in society. She advocated that women are equal to men and they can deal with issues of life in the same manner. Eleanor Roosevelt was active participative of the women’s movement and contributed to addressing women's social and justice issues. She was committed to encouraging other women to build the political base. She has worked for the wide range of human rights in society. She was of the view, “Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home - so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world” and she continued to make efforts for human rights despite opposition. Eleanor Roosevelt led and worked with different women’s groups include International Congress of Working Women, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and Woman’s Trade Union League. She was always focused towards the betterment of humans.
I have learned various aspects of feminism and issues that women are facing in the society. I have understood the concept of women and their social, political, justice, and other basic rights. The experience was good, and I did not found the difficulties in searching for the related information. I have managed it effectively and found the information easily from different sources. I have received sufficient information that increased my knowledge and skills. The research questions are easily understandable and therefore no problem is faced. Overall, it was a great experience, and I have learned many things about the topic and enhanced my knowledge.
